Nature can be much more surprising than photoshopped things you know. This butterfly is real and is extremly beautiful.
November 12th, 2006 at 6:39 pm
That’s not photoshopped. Try using an encyclopedia or dictionary. They still work.

I’ve seen these things and they’re fascinating. They have some at my local zoo.

Greta oto is a brush-footed butterfly, and is a member of the clearwing clade; its wings are transparent. Its most common English name is glasswing, and its Spanish name is espejitos, which means “little mirrors.” Indeed, the tissue between the veins of its wings looks like glass. It is one of the more abundant clearwing species in its home range, which extends throughout Central America into Mexico. - wikipedia

Most of the wing is in fact transparent, and not translucent. If you’re going to be pedantic, be right about it.

La Mariposa Glasswing (alas de cristal)…
La Mariposa Glasswing se puede encontrar en una emplia sección desde America Central hasta México. Las venas de sus alas son tan finas que se trasparentan como el cristal.
…
November 13th, 2006 at 3:26 am
No the word transparent is appropriate here. Translucent applies to anything that allows light to diffuse through it. These wings are not translucent they are transparent and allow details to be seen through the wings….the colored/solid parts of the wing are likely translucent.

i dont think it fair that butterflies (and ladybirds come to mention it) are considered pretty… i mean they are beautiful to look at… but its not fair, they’re just bugs with pretty wings… paint a mosquito’s wings turqoise and it would be just as pretty

I think those little butterflies are exquisite. I love raising butterflies in my backyard. They may be just “bug with wings” to some, but to me they are little floating jewels and I adore them just as they are. Living in the self-proclaimed “butterfly capital of the world” (Coconut Creek, FL), I just wish I could get little glasswings in my backyard!!!
