Greta oto is a brush-footed butterfly, and is a member of the clearwing clade; its wings are transparent. Its most common English name is glasswing, and its Spanish name is espejitos, which means “little mirrors.” Indeed, the tissue between the veins of its wings looks like glass. It is one of the more abundant clearwing species in its home range, which extends throughout Central America into Mexico. – wikipedia

No the word transparent is appropriate here. Translucent applies to anything that allows light to diffuse through it. These wings are not translucent they are transparent and allow details to be seen through the wings….the colored/solid parts of the wing are likely translucent.

      Dearest Heart,

Is it possible to use the glass winged butterfly on the cover of my new CD and give you
credit. I am both an author and Exec. Producer of the World Puja Network. http://www.worldpuja.org

The CD is titled transformation. We will give you complete credit on the back in whatever
      manner is necessary.

      Many blessings,
      Maureen Moss

These butterflies are my forte. They from a family of butterflies called Ithomiinaes, they’re toxic butterflies, with toxins on the wings that make them unpalatable to birds. Taste very bitter.

I wrote a three part series on the Oleria onega glasswing butterfly you might be interested in. They are fascinating creatures that can adapt quickly to natural and unnatural disturbances, changing their diet, which results in changes of physical appearance.

Wow. I added this to facebook because of my love for butterflies but must admit I don’t study the different species, just adore them. These I must see if I have to take that visit to a zoo ….I haven’t seen them in a habitat. Love them. Thanks for sharing.
