An article I found and translated. I feel sad hearing upon this too~~~ Can we not do something? I am someone from Hong Kong. I do wish we could do something.

*BEGIN*
2009 April 14
"Asian's Tallest Female Giant" suffered serious fall

Impoverished family with mother demanding assistance from media, and subsequent municipal government providing help

In the afternoon of April 12, Yao Defan, who is 2.36m tall and titled "Asian's Tallest Female Giant" suffered a fall while making lunch at home, with the brain suffering damage. She was brought to the provincial hospital by her brother. There are still blood remaining in Yao whose condition is classified stable. During the interviewing by the reporters, they were surprised by demands of Yao's mother, "If you don't bring things over, don't take the pictures. Yao's brother explained later that the mother-daughter have no economic resources and lead a very impoverished life. Past media often lent a helping hand (when she was frequently features), so the senile mother do have this misguided assumption.

Yao Ming, who stands 2.26 tall and 141kg, is often aided by teammates when he has a fall. However, Yao Defan, who stood even 10cm taller and weigh 180 kg, has no one to turn to when she fell in the kitchen. The 68-years-old mother could only stand helplessly by her beloved daugther' side on the cement floor.

A dull thump was heard by Yao's mother, Wei XianYing, on 11am at April 12th when Yao was supposedly making lunch. Wei sensed that "Little Fan" had trouble, and noticed Yao writhing on the floor with blood streaming from her head. She called her son living in Hefei. Hearing about the accident, he immediately booked a car to the town. Around 12, an hour after the incident, Yao's brother found 6 or 7 adult males who succesffuly lifted her to the local hospital. After the wound was stitched, she was transferred to the provincial hospital of AnHui.

On the evening of the 12th, many specialists from the province checked on the female giant. According ot the specialist, there still remained blood clot and she is not free of danger yet.

On the afternoon of the 13th, reported rushed to the hospital ward. With the nurses leading them to her bed, Yao was fairly quiet when she was provided (IV) and oxygen while on the bad. On the opposite, Yao's mother was emotionally distubred while seeing the hordes of reported.

She first told the reporters on Yao not wanting to be interviewed. When the reporters assured Wei that only several shots will be taken without flashes, Wei demanded that "no pictures are allowed unless you bring stuffs over". She repeated multiple times, "NO money or foods, then NO pictures and interviews." Turning into an embrassing situation, 68-year-old Wei chased the reporters away.

After they were chased out, Yao's brother followed and explained to the reporters. Ever since being reported, the halo of "Asian's tallest female giant" rested on Yao, being sought after by media both local and overseas. Quite some such media took pity upon the mother and daughter and used to leave some money after the interviews, giving his mother “false impressions".

Finally accepting an interview after being persuaded by her son, Wei explained: Before 2004, Yao was still able to work at the performing arts troupe (translator's note: circus troupe of sort with some dance / acrobatics etc.) and, aside from manage to have meals for her own self, can even bring some money home. However, plagued with illnesses and frequent falls, she had to return home. After the passing away of Yao's father, the mother and daughter could only live in a small room, depending on each other. They mainly survived on savings of Yao as well as low-income welfare support. Due to her enormous appetite, the mature Yao attempted to reduce her portions to make ends meet.

In these two years, Yao continued to deal with epileptic fits, a consequence of the tumor operation. She needed these pills everyday and the medical expenses is a major expense for the family.

The reporters followed up this issue towards the township, who replied that "her situation, whilst extremely extraordinary, is within control and acknowledged by the government. They expressed that previous additional support was provided, other than the monthly RMB 170 (i.e. ~20 USD) support. Another RMB1000 was provided to the family before the Chinese New Year.

In addition, Yao is qualified for health insurance within the rural village's policy. Due to Yao and Wei's educaiton levels, the township will provide on-site assistance to help them process the expense claims. Also, they will attempt to increase her insruance limits as well as appropriate subsidies.

Maybe the best way to find her whereabouts is to contact the foreign doctors who might have contact with the Chinese doctors. It's likely that they DO know where she is, and her present condition. Moreover, it seems that the doctors MIGHT be the most trustworthy contacts. Government officials in China certainly won't be. Someone please give an update, and let me know who can and will contact the doctors -- if anyone remembers their names, and if they were mentioned during the documentary. Most of all PRAY FOR HER. She needs salvation. She needs to know the love of God through His Son Jesus Christ.

If we can just find an address to send funds to, we could do something on Facebook or the many sites that collect for charitable causes.... Has anyone done more research? Right now, Haiti is in such trouble with so many people in need, but Yao Defen has had a whole life of misery. Besides - if we all kick in a few dollars, it doesn't hurt us and DOES help others...

Has anyone set up a fund anywhere to help her? I just saw the 2009 airing. They released her from the hospital because they could not afford any more. Surly there must be a fund somewhere!

I watched the re-airing of the 2007 show and was just sickened. At the end of the show, it was all to obvious that she would not receive the surgery, let alone long term help. It is disgusting that "saving face", is more important than helping the later years of her life to be tolerable. Shame on all of these American media outlets that have not done enough to make a difference for Yao Defen. The air of secrecy that is surrounding her in 2009, lends one to believe that she is not doing well. How can we demand an update?

I too am having trouble getting any information on Yao Defen, last night Aug 23rd 2009 Discovery Channel ran an episode of "My Shocking Story World's Tallest Man meets World's Tallest Woman" in which we see that Yao Defen has suffered a catastrophic fall (due to her lowered blood pressure, loss of balance) and suffered a head injury so severe as to cause two brain hemorrhages. She is rushed to hospital and later in the episode is then visited by a Dr. Grossman from London to see about her pituitary tumour and is visited by the world's "tallest man" (Zhao Liang? I can't remember - will have to re-watch the recorded program) to cheer her up. During the episode she is at first almost fatally ill from her fall, but improves slowly at hospital. They cannot perform an MRI on Yao Defen to get details about her tumour because of the surgical clips left in by the (unsuccessful) operation 10 years ago. The doctor ends up going back to London but agrees to provide some pituitary hormone medications via sponsorship. Yao Defen has to go home from the hospital in spite of her parent's anxiety because they've run out of money. And NO there was never a second operation - she was simply given medicines which soon ran out. It's a very sad case and this "update" only leaves new questions. I hope I win lottery - I would track her down and help her.

I too have just viewed this documentary. Why has no follow up been done ? Would Guiness Records have an update on her condition? It is incredible what both she and her family have endured

I read a part of the story; but, she is really tall. Also, I read about the finds that the scientist have discovered about the giants who exceeded 11 metres tall in the old ages. They found their bone remains in some parts of the world.

I just finished watching the documentary on Discovery Health. I too wish her and her family all the best of good health and peace. I would hope that the documentarians would head back to China and get an update, especially from those Doctors. They never really showed a strong commitment to help the poor girl and ther famliy and that is sad since it seemed they were a very talented medical staff with modern facilities. A patient is a partient - no matter the social class. I hope there will be a positive outcome.

I too watched (2009 re-airing) the story of Defen on the Discovery Channel. Upon the program's conclusion, I immediately googled for an update on this beautiful woman. I am saddened to find so little information. I pray that the doctor's in her country did not lose interest in her after the cameras left. A follow-up story would be nice.

Haven't heard anything new about Yao Defen. She's lucky to get help from the doctors. I live in the USA & can't get help from any of the doctor's here. Although my situation is completely different from Defen, it seems no one is willing to help unless you are on your death bed. I have been trying to have lapband surgery for ever. My triglycerides & cholesterol are both high, but there is nothing I can do my husband & myself are both unemployeed. Anyway not about me , back to Defen I am very concerned & would like to know if everything is o.k. was all of the tumor gotten out?? I wish I had some money I would love to help out. Prayers & Best Wishes.

I sent an inquiry to Discovery Health about Yao Defen and got the following answer:

Dear Viewer,

Thank you for contacting Discovery Networks. We appreciate your interest
in our program World's Tallest Woman.

Yao Defen's giant stature was caused by a large tumor in her pituitary
gland. Six years ago, a hospital in Guangzhou Province removed the tumor,
and she stopped growing. The tumor returned and she was treated in
Shanghai in 2007, but was sent home for six months with the hope that
medication would reduce her tumor enough to allow surgery. It remains
unknown if the second surgery was ever performed.

Again, thank you for your interest in our programming.

Sincerely,

Viewer Relations
Discovery Networks

It seems to me that no one bothered to follow up on her condition after this program was aired. If they show it again, anyone interested in knowing about or helping this poor woman should get the name of the doctor who actually wanted to treat her and trace her through him. That's what I'll try to do as well.

I just saw the programme "World's Tallest Woman" on TLC (The Learning Channel) and after the show, went on Google to find out the status of Defen but to no avail. I was appalled at the way the Chinese doctors handled her case and at one point, refusing to allow another surgeon to help her cos they would "lose face". WTF?! I also read more about her story and found out she was made into a circus act where her bosses mistreated her before she finally went home to her mum. Another WTF?!

Anyway, I hope that she finally got her treatment.

This is what I heard from a chinese website. http://news.luaninfo.com/2008-09-16/148775.html

Yao received 'limited treatment' from the Shanghai hospital in 2006 and stayed at home after that. ( I think it means no surgery was underwent) She didn't grow much in these 2 years due to malnutrition. She is suffering from intestine disease, epilepsy, etc.. She and her family is still in serious poverty. Beside getting rid of this terrible disease, she also wants to make a 'real' friend.

As many of you, I also hope she and her family will do well in the future.
