Top 10 Hybrid Animals

Our editors have created a list about the top 10 hybrid animals. Hybrid animals are cross-breds between animals of similar genetics. They mostly exist in captivity and are the result of human intervention. |

10. Liger/Tigon
Though they are fascinating animals, they get the last of the list because they are the most popular known among the hybrids. Ligers are crossbreeds between a male lion while Tigons are crossbreds between a male tiger and a female lion. Ligers are the world’s largest cats. Tigons on the other hand, are prone towards dwarfism and are usually smaller than either of their parents. Male Ligers/Tigons are sterile while the females are often fertile. 9. Wolf Dog
Dogs and wolves tend to crossbreed rather freely. The wolf is a shy animal depending on nuances in body language, facial expression and on hunting skills to survive. Their jaws are much stronger than those of a dog and are often used to exert dominance. For a dog wolf hybrid, it is not known when it will display a wolf behaviour or dog behaviour or something in between. Obedience training is a must in order to tame the animal.

8. Iron Age Pig
Domestic Tamworth pigs are crossbred with wild boar to create ‘Iron Age Pigs’. The hybrids are tamer than wild boar but less tractable than domestic swine and generally become specialist pork sausages. Most of them are bred for the specialist meat trade.

7. Zebroid
A zorse is the result of crossbreeding a horse and a zebra. A zonkey is the result of crossbreeding a donkey with a zebra. The Zony is the result of crossbreeding a pony to a zebra. All these three are called zebroids - defined as a cross between a zebra and any other equid. Zebroids are preferred over zebra for practical uses such as riding because of its body shape. However it is more inclined to be temperamental and can prove to be difficult to handle.

6. Cama
A Cama is a hybrid between a camel and a llama. They are born via artificial insemination due to the huge difference in sizes of the animals which disallow natural breeding. A Cama usually has the short ears and long tails of a camel but the cloven hooves of a llama. Also most noticeably is the absence of the hump.

5. Grolar, Pizzly
A grolar/pizzly hybrid is the product of a grizzly bear and a polar bear. Although the two bears are genetically similar, they tend to avoid each other in the wild. During 16 April 2006, a hybrid bear was shot dead by Jim Martell,a hunter from the United States, in Canada. It was the first time a hybrid was found in the wild where previous records of grolars or pizzlies have only been found in zoos.

4. Leopon
A Leopon is the result of breeding a male leopard and a female lion. The head of the animal is similar to that of a lion while the rest of the bodies carries similarities to leopards. The most successful breeding programme was at the Koshien Hanshin Park in Nishinomiya City, Japan. Leopons are larger than leopards and likes to climb and enjoy water.

3. Hybrid Pheasant
The Golden Phesant has commonly been crossed with the similar Lady Amherst’s Pheasant. The result is a hybrid with distinguished colors from its parents.

2. Wolphin
A wolphin is a rare hybrid formed from a cross between a bottlenose dolphin and a false killer whale. There are currently only two in captivity at the Sea Life Park in Hawaii. A wolphin’s size, colour and shape are intermediate between the parent species. The first captive wolphin was Kekaimalu, which shows mixed heritage even in its teeth: bottlenose dolphins have 88, false killer whales have 44 and Kekaimalu has 66!

1. Ti-Liger, Ti-Tigon, Li-Tigon, Li-Liger
The top spot goes to ti-ligers/ti-tigon/li-tigons/li-ligers because it is a hybrid among the hybrids. It is a cross breed between a male tiger and a female liger/tigon or a male lion with a female tigon/liger. Do note that female ligers or tigons are fertile. They are extremely rare and are in mostly private ownership within a behavioural studies programme. In the case of ti-ligers, they have unusual striping where it breaks up and display a blotchy appearance. Since they are 3/4 tiger, their characteristics inhibit more of those of a tiger than a lion.

to be honest i dont think any of this is ethcally or morally wrong you all sound like your adults in the middle of your life and you have been argueing about this for along time but the real answer is if it occurs naturally in nature then it was supposed to happen who are we to question he powers of nature it is just creating new species for the world you may not understand it now and people may not understand in a thousand years but honestley and truley no-one not even man can tustle with nature we will loose, and going on from previous arguements if it can breed it can tecnically be classified as a species of its own to be an animal all it must do is breed move and have to find its own food if it can do this then it is a species and why would an elephant be crossed with a jellyfish they have to be similar to another species like a horse, zebra donkey and pony their cant just be an animal totaly randomly come out of the blue from a whale and an ant it just is not physicaly possible if their chromosones cant pair together properley you will have a very deformed animal if the ovule can be fertilised at all ………….. by the way im 14 just to show that age has nothing to do with how smart or mature or adult like you all are hope this proves topical

although some of these creatures were created by human scientists, it’s not originally created by them because they “want to play God” but because it actually happens in the wild, for example the liger wasn’t created by humans, and other hybrids, it’s due to natural selection.

i have a dog that is a hybrid he is part wolf he is very mean sometimes he looks just like a wolf. he has five toes on his back feet but none of his sisters have those qualities but his mom does she even pined him down once.my puppy will be sitting down and im petting him then i stop and then start and he bites me and snarls his lips ad growls. should i be afraid of him when he is older?

There is definitely something wrong with this idea of cross breeding.
If the animal becomes subject to the immoral curiosity of man, who knows what could happen.
If the animal does not partake in such activity on its own time in the wild, then such activity should not be forced upon the animal in order to delight our visual senses.

Dogs all came from wolves. The type of wolf is unimportant (gray, timber etc.) They were domesticated 1000’s of years ago. Then, through select breeding we got the 100’s of breeds of dogs from the Irish wolfhound (the largest dog) to the Chihuahua (arguably the smallest breed of dog) Yet, all are descendants of the wolf. There is no argument here. And the dog and wolf can and do interbreed quite easily. The slight differences in DNA are a result of eons of domestic breeding. You’d find the same differences in domesticated cattle or fowl or any other species. You’ll even find a slight difference in DNA between timber and gray wolves for example. And there are NO confirmed fox/dog crosses. They are not the same species. So if you see fox/dog crosses for sale be very wary. The seller is unscrupulous.

Dude, (2 spots below me) I just saw on the history chanel (like 13 minutes before i posted this) that there was a russian man who tryed to make human/chimpanzee hybrids to prove to the church that it was evelution, not creation. He almost did it when he tryed to inject oragatang sperm into a human woman. the expariment failed when the man was arrested by the govement for these expariments. Modern scientist also say that Human/Ape hybreading is imposible because humans/apes have grown slowly farther apart on the evelutionary chain in the last 50,000,000 yrs. scince the ancient forms of human/apes stoped hybreading with each other and it is no longer possible to do today.

-I agree with the first part you said, but I think it is just SICK to say something like “I love how this rare breed of bear was killed by a hunter” just because it was a hybrid or some shit like that. Seriously.. they are still animals!.. Living things that feel pain and have feelings.. the best answer would be to not create them in the first place because it would just eliminate all those problems right where they started. But still.. in a way I do kinda think that breeding to get those kinds of hybrids and breeding different animals or species(and don’t even get started on the definition of species again!) is interesting.. just because it’s quite interesting to find out what the ‘cross-breed’ would look/act like, but I also definitely think that the max. amount of hybrid offspring you should produce is about 3 or something. You can let those hybrids live for as long as they will, and you would still have the answer(of what the cross breed would be like)! The thing I don’t understand is WHY some people just keep going on with the cross breeding even though they have already gotten hybrid offspring… and then at the end they’ve produced like 10!

First off, Nicoli, we studied this for a project and look at the domesticated dog’s family, Canidea, more commonly known as K-9. Theese cannot breed with our family, Primates. It’s physically impossible, but I can easily tell you probably got the idea from the mythological lupo manero, or the Werewolf. Cool.

I don’t necessarily feel that it’s wrong. Animals have become what they are from the root stock that split, that’s what true evolution is. People tend to think of evolution as the theory of evolution, but evolution actually just means change. If there was no change, there would be no dogs, just wolves.
No one has said a thing against mules in thousands of years. They are mentioned from earliest times and they are hybrids of a donkey and a horse. As long as the animals are of the same actual species, they will breed, even in the wild, if there are none of their own kind to mate with.
Goatalopes (goats and pronghorn antelope hybrids) have been around for a long time. Both are of the goat family. All of the above animals are of the same family group. They’ve not created puppy cats or anything that’s not of the same species to start with.
It’s not unusual out west for a big horn sheep to get in with a herd of domestic sheep and breed. I have a friend that raises sheep in Colorado and a wild bighorn got with his herd and he had several lambs born from it.
Many who object are basing that on religion, and there’s nothing wrong with that. The bible does speak of unnatural matings, that are forbidden. But I do believe that would mean crossing actual species, not the different subspecies of a species.

wtf people. you should be disgusted by this, and not because of god. You should be disgusted because these animals may have unforeseen health problems. Even some domesticated animals that that are bred to the same species( let alone these animals bred with other species) end up with severe anomolies in their genes that cause them to have short, painful lives or make life harder than it should be and all because people just MUST have a certain trait. What right do we have to cause these animals undue pain and health issues? Would your pet to have out the ass health issues like that?
And I would also like to point out that none of theses poor animals dams or what the hell ever the technical term is their moms, asked some nerd with rubber gloves to up to his elbows to shove some splooge into her vajayjay,???I think not my homo erectus brethren, therefore it’s like raping the poor animal.

Well here is my probably very unpopular thought…as humans slowly drive some species to extinction, perhaps it is our job to create new ones to take their place? Mother Nature (or God) would not let us if we weren’t meant to try, and learn, as lond as no pain is caused. Please remember that both these higher powers are much stronger than us, and trust me, if what we are doing are not in the plan, it would not happen. If we are all to die out because of some freakish mutant results, then that is also the plan…who cares, the planet will go on and change like it has for millions of years.

Well just like dogs have so many variations within their DNA, so do other animal types. Cats (feline) etc.. So you’ve got a horse like creature that has the ability to become all the variations etc… (Zebra, Mule)… A lama-like thing.. Camel, Lama etc.. In South Korea they just produced four puppies that glow red under UV light. I think that is awesome that we can insert genes into animals. Thats a huge step toward making cures for diseases related to genetic traits. All of these religous people are trying to speak for god and i think thats wrong. Hybrids are a natural things that occure in nature.

It’s a combination of a male timber wolf, a female crocodile, and the blood,strength, and aggrretion of an actual Tyrannasaurus Rex!! This dangerous animal has done sooo much to our society today. This is politically incorrect and possibly racist, but isn’t this exactly what has happened with the various “races” of “humans?” Isn’t it possible that the Oriental, Occidental, Negro, etc. were all distinct and that there is as much difference between a Negro and a Caucasian as there is between a Black Bear and a Polar Bear?

the liger is a sad animal because the two animals (tiger and lion) are so diffrent tigers love water and swimming and are more of a lone animal where as lions dont like to be in water and also travel in groups and like company so the liger is always in conflict with its own natural instinct also it is always in pain as it grows till death so sad how people mess with naturefor no other reason than because they can a agree with niko man does not deserve to be caretaker of this planet

I came to this site doing serious research. Now I know that “species” is a nebulous term attempting to differentiate between differing groups. Close to what we want, but not exact. I also learned that a lot of people just want to act stupid for whatever reason, but often foul up reasonable people. I tell a lot of jokes myself, but it seems out of place for stupid people to intrude on science.

Dear Ladies and Gentlemen, the film that Roger Patterson and Bob Gimlin made in 1967 in Northern California at Bluff Creek of Bigfoot was real. Here is what they filmed on October 20 1967. In the past 94 years the world’s population has increased by 5 Billion people. That’s only one lifetime. In 500 years that will be 25 Billion people. If there is poverty, starvation, global warming and a hole in the ozone layer now, what do you think it will be like in 500 years? Man in literally destroying the earth and himself by over populating. Save your generations from suffering a miserable and horrible end. Why, WHY, mix animal species?
Because it’s fun and we’re able to?
It’s so unethical to breed these weird hybrids. Animals that would never meet in the wild. Or animals that, if they met, wouldn’t be able to mate. Why do it? Can anyone answer this question?

There actually has been some stuff about the chimp human thing, A zoo keeper fall in love with a chimp then she had a chimp human thingy. The zoo took it away from her, it was mostly chimp like. I think the zoo should give her monkey baby thingy back to her, cuz it’s partially hers.

SSpiffy, acctually the Neanderthal was our closest relative and it was possible to breed with them for us Humans. However our rivalrys eventually marked their extinction, just like we did for many animals.

Any hybrid is possible! right now we are on the verge of a major leap in genetic engineering also our ways of understanding the complex diversity of (DNA) are progressing faster than ever before! master sequence caps will soon be recreated for many types of life and cellular mitosis will become a thing of the past. the next 50 years is set to be very promising, we will soon be able to alter our own genetics even after they are determined by our chromosomes.

I have a question: is it possible to get a human species where men won’t be bald, won’t have dandruff, won’t have big bellies and would look like adolescent boys all their life, without nasal hair?
And women won’t have a big ass and fat all-over them?
I would like that change, but am I the only one who would like it?
