Crab Fishing In Alaska - World’s Highest Paid Job
|
Crab fishing is the most significant of the Alaskan commercial shellfish industries. It has been considered as one of the last great gold rushes on earth. The waters of Alaska are home to rich bounties of crabs esp the famed Alaskan crab as shown in the picture. It is a prized dish in the culinary world where US and Japanese restaurants are the primary importers. In the 80’s during the king crab boom, boat captains could regularly earn US$150k a season. |
|
The Alaskan crab fishing crashed in 1983 and picked up in the year 2001 and so on but still it commands the highest pay. Despite the high pay, it is one of the most dangerous jobs in the world.

Why are all of these people asking for crab fishing jobs on this site? This wasn’t an advertisement for getting hired on as a crab fisherman–it was an article about how much crab fishermen make. Do you honestly think that captains of crab boats get on these sites, look at the comments, and say, “Oh wow! That guy there sounds like he’d be a great worker! Good thing I got on this random website and found this comment he posted!” I mean, really? And I like how most of the idiots asking for the jobs are like, “I’ve seen the Deadliest Catch, I know what to expect!” The trouble is, just because you’re a fan of the show and haven’t missed an episode does NOT make you “prepared” for the crab fishing industry or anything like that. The show is interesting, yes, but it’s a very watered down version of the real thing. I know, because I have been commercial fishing up in Alaska for 14 years, and have been around those crab boats and on several during that time. The show is interesting, yes, but in reality it’s a cop-out. There are so many things about crab fishing life that the show cannot capture just because it’s just that–a TV show made to appeal to the millions of people that watch TV every single day. Truth is, crab fishing is not what it used to be, and some things on the show are exaggerrated or not shown in full detail just so as to maintain the audience’s interest.
Also, with a quota being put on the amount of crab caught, that also reduced the size of the crab fishing fleet. This caused many crab fishing crews to lose their jobs. So now, with an abundance of experienced fisherman floating around, these crab boat captains are highly unlikely to hire a bona fide green horn from Hawa’ii or wherever the fuck you hail from, just because there’s already so many experienced, jobless crab fisherman floating around in the system. That’s where the show also misleads the general public. The captains’ hire these. So-called “green horns,” when in actuality those “green horns” are experienced fishermen being PAID (by the show) to pretend they are green horn idiots. Think about it–if the show just let on that everyone is experienced at this line of work, wouldn’t that be awfully boring? Nobody to get yelled at or picked on!
Get a life people, honestly. Even if you had half a chance at a job like this, you’re getting no where posting desperate comments on sites such as these. Like somebody else said, try a lower scale fishing job first, like salmon fishing. I’m sure more than half of you blokes have never even set foot on a commercial fishing boat, much less a crab boat. If anything, the Deadliest Catch show pisses me off, because it gets a bunch of losers to thinking that, “Hey! That’s the job for me!” whereas before the fuckin show nobody ever even gave this industry much thought–esp not people down in places like Puerto-fucking-Rico or Minnesota or wherever.
Wow. Get real.

Hi, I am an Indian living on a reservation in New Mexico. I am sick n tired of living in tee pee. Also tired of doing rain dance and getting no results. We having the biggest draught here since 1904. My rain dance used to work. I think if I got re-located, maybe on deck of crab fishing boat, I could re-capture the magic of my rain dance. Maybe crabs would fall from sky, we make big bucks! Then I go home and give crabs to my wife and children, and whoever else sleeps in my bed! Yes?

Dear Seekers,
Crabbing is indeed, a dream job for many but to start with this, you need to have a sharp knowledge about it. I would like to aware you about many schools like Kenai River Fishing Academy, where you can take a 5 day basic fishing training and furthermore recommendation, a STCW95 (a safety certificate) would be a plus! So if you got this stuffs, just knock Alaska especially the kodiak region or seattle and check out the harborside notice boards or any fishing agency (who provide relevant information or even guranteed jobs), m sure you will get a pretty good (ready for dark depression adventure) job and lastly with further experience to the so called crabbing business lol and if you are a Non U.S; get yourself H-1B (NIV) as quickly as possible (J-1 works too), in order to grab the opportunity before someone else dwell en. Good Luck ….
Regards,
Skipper
