Japanese Bees and European Bees Against Hornet Predators

Japanese Bees and European Bees Vs Hornets

The meat eating larvaes are hungry and the hornet colony had to look for food to feed their young. A hornet is 3 times the size and 20 times the weight of a bee. This short documentary looks into how the European bees and Japanese bees use their defence mechanism to stop the hornets from slaughtering their kind. 1 videoclip after the jump.

Damn I wish we could see more of these movies, about ants and other hive like insects also! I really like to see the insects fight each other!

Japanese ingenuity extends even to the animal kingdom.

The Japanese bees and the hornets are local to the area and thus are natural enemies. I’m sure their defense and attack strategy was gained through their biological evolution.

The European bees didn’t have this evolutionary benefit because they were merely imported. Dealing with giant hornets is not something they instinctually know of.

Incredible – they actually cook the hornet! Such a complicated defense mechanism, but so effective.
