Conjoined Twins: Abigail and Britanny Hensel

Abigail “Abby” Loraine Hensel and Britanny Lee Hensel are dicephalic conjoined twins. Britanny is the left twin while Abigail is the right twin. They have two spines which join at the pelvis. They have two stomachs, three lungs and at birth three arms of which one of them was amputated in infancy. |
This is a television appearance on The Learning Channel around the time of their 16th birthday which was aired in December 17, 2006. The Learning Channel looks into the life of Abby and Britanny on how they coordinate between each other during school and daily activities.

What’s amazing is that they are so normal! I can’t imagine how tough things will be when they get older … as michelle points out. What if one is of the alternative pursuasion? What if they both like different guys? Can you legally marry a conjoined twin, or do you marry one of them? If the latter, I guess you’d always be having threesomes … too weird!

What everyone needs to remember is that they are two individuals who happen to share the same body. It is extraordinary and I commend their parents for raising two wonderful people. I am sure as they get older, their lives will be full of trials, but I am sure they will also lead fulfilling and rewarding lives.

I am a teacher in a secondary school in England doing a module for year 8 students about discrimination. Tomorrow we are going to do a lesson about the origins of Freak Shows and how people consumed them, and then look at if people view things differently these days, looking at the incredible Abbey and Britney.

Those two girls are just astounding. So strong, and doubly self-determined, if that’s not a contradiction in terms. I think they would make fantastic co-ordinators for ‘team skills’ courses!! Amazing how the human spirit will always find a way!!

I have just seen the girls for the first time on a documentary and i thought my life was complicated. These girls do have more problems than most of us put together, but seem to be getting on with life regardless. I think they are an insperation to us all. God bless them.

Abbey & Brittany
I live in the UK and watched the documentary this evening (15th March 2007). Cool girls I think. I dont care how they look physically. What I saw however were two young girls with an independency about them. They happen to be cojoined, but it hasnt prevented either Abbey or Brittany in achieving what they have set out to do. I look at these two people as a miracle, but also as two people - of course they are. I was however offended when I watched the dickhead with a video camera at the baseball game. Ok, its his job to capture things on video and the opportunity was perhaps too great for him to resist, but where were his manners. Didnt he think to ask, or to introduce himself and ask permission to film. Maybe Abbey & Brittany may have said “yeah..OK…hurry up, but get out of our faces as we are here to watch a ball game…der! If I saw them in the street, I would go over and say hello, to both of them - seperately. Abbey and Brittany are excellent examples of typical teenagers (I got two myself and a younger one). I also dont actually care how they function together at a body level like the obsessed doctors (they have a job to do as well I suppose, and are bound to have more questions than they can deal with). Whats important is that Aabbey\has a life and her own aspirations, just like Brittany does. They have a life and they have each other for support. They have a fantastic mother as well. Looking beyond the etched strained wrinkles (sorry Mrs H) of a person who has lived every day wondering what just might be for her twins, I applaued her excellent job of her and her husbands job in bringing these two girls up. To Abbey - I think you would be a good designer. To Brittany, how about becoming a pychologist. Just my gut instinct from watching your mannerisms. Anyway…you may never read this, but if you ever do, I’d swap emails, and chat about the English weather or something. Terry

I watched a Discovery program a few months ago about the two getting thier licences. They seem to have pretty much a normal childhood.I remember seeing them back a few years ago on a TLC program involving another set of conjoined twins over in the UK, (Katie and Eilish). Everyone asks about school, their careers, friends.. etc. The thing I’m curious about is how do they handle intimacy? They’re in thier teens now, and I’m sure boys are on thier minds. How do they handle the intimate moments ?

There’s no need to wonder. As I recall, the best known “Siamese” (conjoined) twins Chang and Eng Bunker ( Chang and Eng Bunker http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chang_and_Eng_Bunker ) were married,and had no problems with intimacy up to and including fathering children. They married two women who were sisters, though, so I suppose that made private matters easier. According to Wikipedia: “(The Bunkers) were accepted as respected members of the community. On April 13, 1843, they married two sisters: Chang to Adelaide Yates and Eng to Sarah Anne Yates. Chang and his wife had ten children; Eng and his wife had twelve. In time, the wives squabbled and eventually two separate households were set up just west of Mount Airy, North Carolina – the twins would alternate spending three days at each home.(…) Many of their descendants still live in the Mount Airy area (of North Carolina).”
10 and 12 kids– !!! That’s waaay too ambitious for anyone, I’d say.
As far as other “privacy” matters for Abigail and Brittany, I suppose if they want to keep secrets from one another, passing notes and holding them in such a way that the other girl can’t see’em is not difficult, though writing the notes without sharing them with the other girl might be difficult.
But, HEY, we’re talking about two TEENAGE GIRLS here. I imagine they “handle” intimate moments by gabbing and sharing secrets CONSTANTLY.
The world will never need newsstations, as long as there are teenage girls and phones.

Absolutely amazing!
The odds of this can’t be measured. I believe this is nothing short of a miracle. You have to wonder just what the Lord has in the works for for such a person(s) of two distinct personalities manifest in one physical creation. It goes to show, without a question, that nothing is impossible for God The Creator.
Only you know for sure what you feel emotionally and physically, whether as one or two.
I would guess that one does complete what the other says from time to time. As though each is aware of the others mind set. You are a unique soul, pushing the boundaries of life. One thing that needs to be answered is whether one became aware of the other and when did one learn the others name. If each are totally separate, what was your experience when you discovered each other? And at what age where you when first aware of a twin? Perhaps there is co-operation as one mind since we know there is one body, just developing two distinct flavors for things because of the two names given to each at birth giving each the belief of separation. So as far as they are concerned they have always been one in one body.Whereby, each preforming specifics for the body and spirit. However If the twins are completely separate in mind and identity, then one will give herself up to the other temporarily in respect for the others privacy.(that would mean any matter where privacy is needed). There is always agreement with one another and not in conflict. Since the left hand can’t slap the right. The separation is complete and honest. To ask some of the odd questions that are being asked by many of these posts, these are only curious and ridiculous.
The fact is… God created you! and you are a living soul like me and everyone else! Isn’t that worth celebrating? Be excited over the fact that you are set apart from others totally distinct and unique! Do you think God knows how to save his own? You Bet! And you are His!
Physically speaking, your private life should remain a mystery to others. That of which I pray you don’t share openly from the pressures of the curious seekers, but only to the one if or when you choose your significant other.
May our Great Father in Heaven bless you with a sea of blessing and always remain in faith in Him. Only He Himself will reveal openly what He has blessed you with. He does hears you in secret; so trust Him with a sea of faith! Look, listen and be wise! You are only one of you! AND Not ever to be duplicated again. So… be prosperous, live long and be healthy.

If you have 3 lungs then does that mean you share one? or does one of you have 2 and the other has one? if you share one does that mean that one of you can go underwater and the other can stay over water and the one under water could still breathe????

i’m writing a metaphysics paper on the girls and had some questions about them and didn’t know if anyone could answer them for me. i was wondering how the government treats them, as one person or two. as in how many social security numbers then how many bank accounts they have and say one if admitted to the hospital, how many people do they admit, one or two?

My thoughts and questions are philosophical, related to consciousness, in particular self consciousness. Although they each control one half of their body, can Abby and Brit share feeings along the midline and in particular the gut (intestines, liver, bladder)? The neural networks in the gut must contribute the extrodinary coordination possbile between these two. If there is pain in the gut do they both feel it? And could they possibly carry on without the other in the event of a tragedy? I see them as more than two individuals because they share such a deep understanding of the other through a shared experience. There’s no question that they are two people, but they also could be more than that, as they understand they other so intimately.
Some questions. How do they coordinate their movements, talking and reactions? Can one remain awake while the other doses?

They are not so unique in fact, you know. There are people like this. I`ve read about two other women just like them. They were born in Russia in 1950, died in 2003. Their mother got mad, and they had mental problems themselves, and lived in hospitals, and were not very happy.
I wish Abbey and Brittany just a normal happy life, as happy and normal as it has been up to now.
They`ll cope.

Ab and Brit strike me as great girls who live like any other young women. They may share a body, but they are two people as they have different prsonalities and tastes.They do well in accomodating one another as they have to do alot of daily functions and activities togethr.In many ways they seem lke identical twins who do not share a body even tho they do.Of course I do wonder if it will be hard when it comesto college, carreers, having kids,marriage ect. How does one handle one liking one food while the other hates it or visa versa? Do they ever feel they are invading one anothers privacy? I think thier parents are great people and Abby and Brittany are very pretty young women.I wish them the best in everything!

I recently viewed the documentary on the twins, They are two extraordinary young ladies. I take my hat off to their family, friends and teachers that have totally aborbed the twins in their everyday lives. You both are truly amazing!

I, as many other people, am just astonished at how amazing these two young women are. All of the questions on this topic are compeling. One thing I have to say about many of these comments is this: Though these girls deserve just as much privacy as they desire, as do we all, the comments pertaining to their intimacy issues should not be censored. When people lose their curiousity they also lose thier ambiton to learn. As humans we all must learn. . . this much is certain in a world seeming much too random and, at times, extremely unfair. When we lose that all-too-important drive to quest for knowledge, we start to die. So, though you may take offense to certain questions and comments, keep your mind open. Not all these posters are degenerates and “sicko’s” they are simply curious and expanding their view of the world. On the other hand, posters like “Kymmy-rae” should keep their misguided and ignorant opinions to theirselves. Back to the topic of Brit and Abbey: amazing! I hope to come across them someday in my travels through the world!
By the way, a book I read recently tackles some of the same issues of confidence and diversity as well as adversity while at the same time utilizing a stunnly visual storyline told as a fantasy fic novel. It’s called KEEPERS OF THE LOST STAR STONES from dustyroadpublishing.com. It fits well with these topics.

There is one thing I know for sure: Abby and Brittany are very choice daughters of our Heavenly Father. They were created in the spirit world as two distinct individuals, and their spirits entered their mother’s womb as two seperate beings. Even though it was only because of a glitch in their fetal developement that they were not able to split apart and gain their own independant earthly bodies, they certainly knew that this was to be their fate even before they were conceived - and they were brave enough and strong enough to accept it. They are beautiful young women, and are truly loved by their Heavenly Father. And I know that after their lives on this earth has ended they will spend eternity in their own, perfectly-formed seperate bodies. They are truly blessed.

There are many people who live their lives through others, eg. obsessed about soaps on TV. and celebrities, yet you manage to live 2 very intertwined lives emerging as 2 very separate individuals with your own unique personalities
I am sure the fact that you kept medical and other examination to a minimum empowered you both so that you have grown up deciding you are able to do whatever you put your minds to, don’t anticipate future events , and make decisions when and if they are required.

abbey and brittany both have a highly developed form of team work and social skills most of us take for grantit. if anything we should be learning from that example. both of them are in good health and are diong the best they can in an unforgiving world and should be respected as such. we never know why mother nature throws us a curve ball like this but i can say one thing for sure we must be thankfull for what we do have “indipendance being one of them”. as for abbey and brittany they have to always be considerate to eachother which includes not jeprodising each others saftey or health or even getting oneanother into trouble. they have to be accountable to eachother until the day they die, thats the kind of comitments they have to ballance. both of these girls are very good looking and would make an interesting date and interesting wives. in respect to the law in the case of marrage the law will have to bend to the will of the diversity of there situation and honour there wishes, if it was the will of god for them to be this way they shall also have gods blessing in matramony.

i believe that if we all could see past what we consider to be others disabilities, then we only see the person(s) and not their disabilities. i.e. chemistry. most people are superficial. this is normal i guess. our mother on the other hand was born with only one hand ( no pun intended) she raised nine of us. and twins on top of that. we only have to live as these so called special people to ee life in their eyes and then probably their lives would be no different than ours. abby and brittany are on top of my lists.

I originally saw Abby and Brittany many years ago on Ophra. I was amazed at the girls and her parents…there love, strength, and compasion. I had never seen conjoined twins in that stage before and was so moved that I never forgot them. I’ve seen them many times on television and still in awe at there ability to do anything that they want. Nothing is going to stop them! Congratulations girls for being the inspiration to many other young people and I would be honored if I should ever meet you someday.

I just been watching documentaries and l just learned about the identical twins Abby and Brittany just about a week ago and never knew they existed but I think they are the coolest people ever. They can do so much more than I can. I always wanted a twin, identical or fraternal it didnt matter but being conjoined is neat. I Wish I could ask them alot of questions. Do they look at this page??? I had wondered about if one died if both would die also or if the one died she would be surgically removed and buried. I know this is a morbid question but just wondering. I would be honored to even get to meet them. I think they are awsome. I know they just turned 18 in March of this year and think its wonderful how they do things. If you think about it they are totally 2 different people. Identical twins are where the egg separates into 2 babies and in Abby and brittanys case it didnt separate all the way. In one documentary their younger brother and sister says they are crabby when they get up. Do they not sleep good at night? and why? and how do they sleep? do they keep each other awake? These girls are amazing. I just watched a show about them on the Tv. They made me feel so happy about life. I was watching oprah the other day and a girl was on that was young about my age around 22 and she had stage 4 cancer. She said “life is to sweet to be bitter”! I really was taken away when I heard her say this. I was born with a cleft lip and palate and everywhere I go I get little kids saying to their parents what is wrong with that girls lip. It has became something that does not bother me that these kids say because young children are allowed to wonder. However, I have became very angry toward the parents for not saying anything to their children or teaching them manners and that everyone is different. When I watched the show I just thought about how much crap I took from kids as I grew up and thought about what these girls go through everyday. They are amazing and have such great personalities. I really believe that my family, friends and instilled personality has gotten be to where I am today. I have taken my birth defects and done a great thing from the experience. I have just graduated from nursing school and plan to work with children with defects. Everyone just needs to realize that these girls might look different but they also have feelings. Just be considerate and as for Brit and Abbey, Keep on going just be yourself and have fun, life is to short and sweet to worry about what others are thinking about you. I noticed you do not like when people take video of you and I completely understand. I have just decided that the more I show that I am comfortable with the way I look the more inspiration I can bring to others dealing with physical defects. Whatever you decide to do in the future when it comes to family, children and marriage just have fun and inspire others with your personalities!!!! I LOVE YOU GIRLS!

Wow, I have the same question as Marlie. I suppose which one is participating mentally in the act will know once they concieve and then will know it is their child. Although that does not take into consideration if they are both participating in the act (sex) with the same male, in which case, uh akward lol. Okay, I’m a Special Ed teacher and , therefore, no one can judge me if I have a few questions. Why is everyone being overly sensitive and not stating the obvious. This situation is awful. How , on earth, could the girls ever have a normal love life-it’s IMPOSSIBLE. To have sex with the one is to have sex with the other. I’m not being insulting; it’s the truth. Why does no one want to admit it. They share a vagina and a bladder. Masturbating is normal, but it can’t happen in private. Sex is normal, but it wouldn’t be. This is not a healthy situition. Their necks look tired from being tilted all the time. I would have given them the surgery from day one , so that at;east one could have a normal-yes, I said it, normal life. I don’t think it’s fair to let them live life like that. I’d have spared them. This was not God’s plan. Something went wrong. The parents I feel are doing them an injustice-why? I would NEVER want to go to the bathroom with someone else and NEVER be alone. I’d spare my child . Save her or spare her. How could the show not address the moral dillemma or the intimacy dilemma and call itself complete. These parents are not fair.

I watched the TLC documentary when they turned 16, and when they were younger on Dateline NBC. They are truly amazing, beautiful girls, the coolest personalities and fun-loving teenagers. They would be easy to fall in love with after you got to know them. I don’t see any problem with them finding a soulmate that loves them both for who they are. I saw the girls on a documentary last night. They are two girls, now women, who must live in the same space for the rest of their adult lives. Now, it has been a beautiful and miraculous thing so far to see them grow up as children, to see how they coped with everyday things like eating and sleeping and doing homework, but now they are becoming ADULTS.
So we can do one of two things, either give them their privacy and mind own businesses, or we can ask the questions we’re curious about. They conjoined at the bottom of the spine, or in other words the HIP. And if you’re curious about conjoined twin anatomy that will lead to the questions about sex, childbirthing, and their ability to feel sensations on “shared” body parts.
If they don’t want to share, fine, but I think they’re old enough to handle simple questions like that. It’s not perversion, just anatomical curiosity.
