Truth Happens - Linux Ad

A very nice teaching about the ways of thinking delivered in this Linux ad clip. It is not just about Linux as it takes a look into some of past history events where in times of ignorance, ridicule and opposition, the truth does happens. 1 videoclip after the jump.

Really nice video, congrats!

I dont think linux will win simply because the majority of the world uses windows. Since there are tons of viruses just for windows, people will probably move to linux. But once virus writers write stuff for linux…its over. There is no clear cut winner.

give credit where it is due. this ad was developed and produced by Red Hat:

Don, it’s a commonly held misconception that Linux is virus free because of it’s low userbase when compared to MS Windows. That is false.
There have been viruses for Linux, but their impact has always been minimal due to Linux’s secure design and all have been eradicated thanks to fast updates. It’s that secure, user-permissions-based design that prevents malicious software from affecting a Linux system.
Your reasoning suggests that no hacker in the world would like bragging rights to being the first person to write a Linux virus. That’s just silly.

don, the commercial is saying the exact opposite of your comment. Do you understand?
May 6th, 2007 at 11:08 am
Don’t let don’s comments get to you; I think he’s just trying to poke fun and simulate the first obstacle mentioned in the video (02:44).

Absolutely, thats why linux is present on 95% of all computers right? Oh wait…..
Also, the fun and joy it is to hunt down and compile each and every driver, AAAH!
I have used many linux distros and I keep thinking, why dont I just do this on Windows?
And so does most of the world..
May 6th, 2007 at 3:11 pm
Great Vid man.
One day Linux will rule the world, despite the distro it WILL rule the world…
May 6th, 2007 at 5:01 pm
Don, a large percentage of the web servers you will ever come across will be running some form on Linux. If that isn’t an incentive to write a Virus for Linux, I don’t know what is, I’m sure a malicious computer user would rather be able to say that they have taken down some big business network, than say that they have taken down some one’s windows Home PC.
The fact of the matter is, that it is harder to write viruses of *nix systems (and that includes macOS, *BSD ect.) not impossible, but harder.
May 6th, 2007 at 6:14 pm
I like how Venom says he’s used many distros but in the exact same comment proves that he obviously hasn’t.

That clip is almost as stupid and full of mistakes as these Apple ads (I’m a Mac, and so on)… And it’s boring. Which brings me to the point of Linux being a boring OS. Linux will never rule the world. It has nothing to do with the OS itself, but with the software. As long as major companies don’t offer their products for Linux, it will remain a system for enthusiasts. Here’s why: the software is designed by programmers. Biiiig problem. The needs of a programmer is not the same as of an end-user. And you can see that in the software. The Gimp is a good example. That one is just terrible. Open source generally lacks its good designers.
Another point is the short release-cycles of the software, as well as the community support, which is pretty much useless with real problems….

Oh, I forgot something. All the stuff mentioned in the “ad” was right at the beginning of the technology, e.g. the 640k statement. But computers are not in their infancy anymore. That’s the difference. That’s why this ad is stoopit.

The next big step in this war has been taken, Dell computers with Ubuntu (cheaper than ones with windows, obviously)
May 6th, 2007 at 9:27 pm
I’m not sure if the operating most people use will ever be “free” but I do think that someday it might reflect true value more than it does now.

@dingdong
The argument in your last comment is questionable. What makes you think that computers are no longer in their infancy? How do you know that? Would you like an example? How about a quantum PC? We haven’t achieved that one yet. And no, I don’t think that quantum PCs would be anywhere near the end of computer technology. I believe that we are STILL at the beginning of technology; and I believe that we will forever.

Great video. Too bad they included the common mythical quote by Bill Gates.
I’d love to see Linux become viable, but the thing is, it’s still unusable by the average person, and the average person rules the market. I’ve begun to experiment with it (unfortunately my motherboard is incredibly unfriendly to Linux), and I bet I could learn to use and love it. But could my mother? Could my wife? Could my brother-in-law? (in case you didn’t guess, the answer is no to all of those). Finding applications for Linux, finding drivers, getting hardware to work, it’s all impossible for most computer users to figure out. And Linux is stuck in a classic catch-22 because the hardware and software makers aren’t going to put enough support into it unless there’s enough of a userbase to make it worth it, and the users aren’t going to buy it unless there’s enough hardware and software support for it.

Fantastic video.
And it is obvious from the comments how many are still in the ignorant / denial / ridicule phases. But the greatest joy has been to see microsoft feel the heat and start fighting - a sure sign that Linux is there!

Good ad, a little long, but good nonetheless.
Most people have heard of Linux now, the perception that it is hard is still strong, but the idea that we must stay on the MS upgrade treadmill seems to be breaking down.

Great ad, but since redhat is a novell product, the quote at the end should probably be changed to “First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then you join them.

I started using Ubuntu 7.04 a few days ago - and I can honestly say that even my mother - my father, who is even worse, could use this. It simply works - as Ubuntu claims. Linux has come a long way for the average desktop user within the last few years - I remember playing with Mandrake 4-5 years ago, and was unable then to use it as an alternative to Windows. Today, I am as previously mentioned using Ubuntu - and that fact before is no longer a fact.
Let the final battle begin!

In reply to Tubefool:
Driver issues will be ironed out as the commercial companies i.e Dell start shipping more hardware with Ubuntu - Your Grandma wants to easily run apps with no hassle ? Buy her a Dell. When I think Linux from now on I’m gonna think ‘Dell’. Yes , life is sweet now. Maybe Dell should make their own distribution - and call it ‘Deluxe’.
