This is cool in a way, scary in a another.
The problem is that after seeing these photoshopped pictures for years, you start to believe that people with flawless skin exist. This makes real people with real, human ‘flaws’ appear to look bad.
I know this type of photo retouching has been going on since way before Photoshop, but it seems to create an ideal that doesn’t exist. I guess the argument could be made that retouching pictures is art.
I have mixed feelings about it.

OK, this is actually “After & Before” photos, not the other way around.
The retouching is understandable in some - in others (especially the last one)

The last one’s original is definitely better.. Why is there a need to create flawless, perfect skins and so on? Who wants that? We? Celebrities, themselves? The media?

Holy crap! I feel so much prettier now after seeing this!! Thank you to whoever made this, showing normal people [especially teens!] that feel horrible because they don’t “add up” to what they see in mags about celebrities! I love you haha. Thank you again this is phenomenal!!

some of those originals look just as hawt, just have a little contrast which is understandable. Photography to compliment an ad or article needs to be eye catching. Some of it is just scary, thats some really really bad skin. Damn!

These photos will help alot with my assignment on body image and teenage girls. They can see that flaws are normal. Body image is a huge concern of teenage girls of today. Most girls believe that skinny is fashionable and they admire celebrities and women for being thin. This has lead girls going to extremes to look like these women. We are held hostage to our cultural standards of beauty, which at best is totally unrealistic and at its worst, enslaves us. It is impossible these days to pick up a magazine or watch TV without getting the message that the ideal beauty is skinny, successful, energetic, young, Caucasian, wealthy and flawless. It is like we have been brain washed into accepting unrealistic standards of beauty.

Really nice work. But the last picture was the best! First i saw the PS retouch and thought: “Yeah nice, but a bit too chemically.” Then i saw the original…. Wow…. Another proof that abstinent from much alcohol and cigarettes can give you a smooth look.

I don’t believe in what you do. Making someone beautiful is the responsibility of the man behind the camera. If you can’t do that then you need to go back to lighting and composition classes. Everyone is beautiful, you don’t need photoshop for that.

Honestly, for most of the pictures I prefer the original - just ’cause I hate the really fake skin look on people. It makes them look like fake little Barbie Dolls. I don’t get why they feel the need to remove freckles, either. Freckles look adorable!

The difference between before/after is especially notable when you view it on their site, where you mouse over the “after” image to see the “before” and the reshaping becomes obvious.
My day job is with a non-profit youth program, and I share this link with others who work with young people as a teaching tool re: body image & the “unreality” of the media.

first of all lets look at color and lighting. White people are going to be red/peach/pale. white people dont look good infromt of the cam anyway. you cant hide zits, scars, ect on white skin. so dont be surprise when you see this . they are people just like you and I . With the right software (photoshop CS3) you can do anything. I have a picture of my 3 year old kid holding up and full grown elephant.
Black/ tan skin is much better to work with.

Now you do not have to employ a professional make up artist, you do not have to bring in expensive lightings as all can nearly be done in Photoshop?

I agree that this kind of processing creates unrealistic and unreasonable expectations of what people should look like. (But apparently I don’t look at these people anyway. 8-))

Interesting, I always love to see the before and after photos with touchups. Man, people are so fake, and most of the time the original looks better, especially the last one. Why would anyone want to cover up her adorable freckles? Her skin already looks smoother than a baby’s butt.
Some of them look pretty amateur, though. (Again, especially the last one, also on the man’s face.) It looks so over-brushed that it the face loses dimension and depth and looks completely fake, flat, and cheesy.

I like the two where they actually fattened up the actresses a bit because they were looking a little too skeletal. (Julia Stiles got a little more curve to the back and the lady in thigh highs on the couch had some muscle added to her arms.)

I am an aspiring photographer and have been working with Photoshop for a number of years now. Sometimes it is necessary to use Photoshop to correct the image as a whole, not just so people can look better than what they are.

I do Photoshop (actually the free program The Gimp) but I use it to restore very old photographs that have become scratched, stained, aged, spotty etc. It is amazing how one can re-create an 80 year old photo and make it like new or better. I do nothing to touch up faces or bodies though, only to remove blemishes from damage.
I also agree with Fred, using graphics programs for re-touching is not in any way a replacement for a good photo to begin with. It is a repair tool, not an art tool, though some may consider some PS art of a kind.

a lot of these photos look different simply because of a contrast boost. it’s hard to believe that all of the original photos have such dull colors. that’s a little bizzare to me.
the retouch of naomi watts barely looks like her. i actually needed the original to tell who it was.

Funny, I couldn’t tell who Naomi Watts was in the “after” photo either. The girl in the last “before” photo is beautiful, but who is she? I’m betting she’s like 15… or maybe she just takes care of herself like Snew said. Anyway, seeing pre-photoshop photos is really encouraging. I remember being a teenager and trying to figure out how these magazine models had NO pores; it sucks when you try to measure up to something that doesn’t exist. I say we boycott fake and forced “beauty” and learn to appreciate the rest of the human being.

If teenagers are looking at these photos and believing them to be real images perhaps parents should have a sit down talk and explain things to them,, while ya there ya mite wanna also tell them that superman isn’t real.
Body image isn’t just restricted to teenagers . all ya have to do is look at the multi million dollar plastic surgery industry to understand that. Its a shame ya cant photoshop kindness and understanding

I knew that practicly ALL the photos in the mags were photoshoped, but now that I have seen all those before and afters, it just shows how much they are done up! I never thought they did it that much! I am in general shock! This is why so many men and women are insecure, if all those photoshoped pictures stayed as they were, what they really were, people would be less insecure, they would still be insecure with there own problems but it would help if the pictures were kept the same.
I am sure people will agree will me, unless there the ones getting Photoshoped!

To a certain extent this is art but i think that should only really aplly to when the photo has been hevely edited to achieve a different type of person of fantasy art like makeing someone look like an elf. But using pictures of celebs and models that have been touched up in magazines is wrong and portrays the wrong inmage to young in heavily influenced minds.

I’m apparently not alone in my freckle outrage. What is with the fashion industry’s hatred of freckles? Is it an unspoken ‘No Irish Allowed’ policy or what?
On the other hand, it’s kind of cheering to see that almost any woman could be in a magazine, since the picture won’t REALLY be of you anyway. I mean, why should my wide hips and asymmetrical eyes keep me from modeling if a little Photoshopping can just fix them? :p

they didn’t add meat to eva…didn’t you noticed that they lessen the clothes…i mean, they erased some of it…take a closer look and the clothes seems a little lower that’s y it looks like something has been added…some of the pictures are adjusted because some of them looks pale…they just adjusted the brightness and contrast of the pic… i can retouch pics but not that super…it’s as if it was not you…like a barbie doll… rather be real… though it doesn’t hurt if you want to look a little nicier… ^_^

People can’t walk around with just the right lighting and perfect makeup all day. So, even the before pictures were most likely set up to be as perfect as they could get the celeb to look with the right camera angles and lighting and makeup and clothes. Imagine what those would look like on the street in every day lighting at every angle imaginable.

I prefer women with little to no makeup on. Whomever the last girl is…I prefer the untouched photo of her. Freckles are sexy. So called “flaws” are sexy.
The media tends to place stigmas on what beauty is. Teenaged girls and women alike read these magazines and watch these movies and look at these photographs and ultimately think that the world will accept them if they look like the FABRICATED women that they see plastered all over the place.
Be who you are, ladies. Show your flaws. If someone does not accept you 100% then tell them to go fuck themselves.

Does anyone else think they tend to go overboard? Sometimes seeing a really gorgeous model wear something (and look incredible) actually makes me not want to get it for fear of looking rubbish compared. Also the last girl looks like an alien when she’s been touched up whereas before she looks cute. Fashion magazines really need to tone it down. I like pretty I don’t like perfect

The second Beyonce photo was also photoshopped (it appeared in a magazine), it’s just the first photo of Beyonce was an online photoshopping of a photo that was already photoshopped for a magazine, she doesn’t look like that

The very last photos present Polish performer Anna Maria Jopek. But I’m not 100% sure…If I’m correct she’s over 40 years old.

This makes my job as a working actress who hasn’t “made” it yet THAT much harder. The casting directors themselves forget that these photos were photoshoped, and except real people to meet these unbelievable standards, so how are real people ever supposed to get hired?

WOW. just WOW.
I agree with what pretty much everyone has said.
When people (especially kids, who are hurt so much by this) see all of this, they believe that this is the norm and then try to duplicate those looks on their bodies and faces. It’s really freaky to see how different it all looks once you take a look at the before and after photos.
I saw a couple of you say, “I feel a lot prettier now!” I know what you mean! When people see those pictures, even if you make a vow not to let it bother you, it’s a subconscious impact that takes place in our brains. I really think that everyone should be reminded of this photoshopping thing from time to time, because I’ve seem this damage so many lives and waste so much time.

Photoshop is such an amazing piece of software, and people who retouch photos in the way which was demostrated on this page are artists - I truly believe that. Anyone who has anything negative to say about Photoshop, or it’s use in media publications, is clearly insecure with themselves.

I think that most of them there didnt really need the extra touch up because not everyone is perfect so why should they be edited to fit some stuck up womans opinion or how they dress. Just because you dont look like them doesnt mean your not hot, pretty or glamorous. Thats just a stereotype when someone says there pretty, they meen someone they have seen in a magazine that might of well just worn loads of industrial foundation and tons of lip gloss. Also editing them makes others feel bad on how they look and they go to lengthy extremes just to slightly look like them when perfection like that is unreal.

the people who get touched up look unnatural, they look fake - it does not appeal to me, and like others have said people who are touched up in magazines make people who hav flaws feel worse about themselves and envy that particular celebs skin/face/body, etc.
its not real, and i think celebs need to wake up.
even tho some photoshop pics look good, however it is a big fat lie

many of he images where just poor photography in the first place, a good number of them where under exposed which would cause a lack of contrast. Every image had a heavy contrast bump.
Lighting is key know what to lights/modifiers to use to get a look/feel is important, too many time on a shoot you will here just fix in PS, PS is evil!!!!
Get it right in the camera!

Well you’re sort of right Dave. It’s scary, yeah…. but it’s not in the slightest bit cool. I suppose it’s now too late for most developed societies to undo, but we have all been taught that us regular joes are just disgusting skin bags, and that we ought to hide ourselves away for not looking like people on magazine covers.
I think these pics are really good - for showing that even all those supposedly aesthetically perfect people sprawled across the latest style mags have EXACTLY the same gripes with their skin, complexion, and body fat that the rest of us do. I’m not sure why the photoshopping is really necessary as all them girls look pretty nice anyway.

i don’t bu magazines because the people in them look so lifeless and dull but if there were natural photos like the before pictures shown I would totally like to look at photos of celebs again. All the before pics had life and character. pores,warts and all is so neat

No real mention of the only guy, Matthew MacFaydden, in all these comments? He is a great actor and extremely handsome to me, but I can certainly understand a promo advert for a new play or telly show he is in to use the photo-shopped picture to remove the spots. It’s what folks expect. If you’re promoting a sleek new BBC drama you want the actors to appear larger/better than reality!
Besides, in his before picture he looks as though he hasn’t slept (or just woke up.) I still think he’s sexy in it because it’s natural.
