Belgian Blue Cattle – Super Cow Aka Incredible Hulk Cow

Super Cow 01

Earlier on we had the incredible hulk dog, Wendy the Whippet. This time meet Belgian Blue Cattle which is famous for their double muscling due to a gene that suppresses the production of Myostatin. This breed produces extraordinary amounts of meat but critics call Belgian blues ‘monster cows’ and some countries have advocated to eliminate the strain. Check out more of Belgium Blue Cattle with 18 more pics after the jump.

What are they feeding those animals? By the time I scroll down to the last picture I feel this urge in the pit of my stomach and I knew right then…I won’t be buying beef again or for that matter eating it.

      I showed the pictures to a teenager (17 yrs.)…reaction of teen, ‘That’s disgusting’…’That’s sick’.

ARE THESE CATTLES ON SOME TYPE OF STEROID? THEY MUST BE!
It looks like an unhealthy solution for more BEEF.

Oh for goodness sake you silly people!!
The cattle are not on steroids!! This is not a new breed!!
These cattle are homozygous for a mutation at the mh locus.
This means that these cattle have mutated dna, they have inherited this disorder, which is particularly prevalent amongst Belgian Blue and Piedmontese cattle breeds.
Cattle that have a single mutated allele have a 7-8% increase in skeletal muscle mass as compared to normal individuals, and homozygous mutant cattle exhibit the “double-muscled” phenotype, like these bulls and cows.

Check out last week’s issue of Sports Illustrated about performance enhancing drugs & genetics. This bull is an example of a genetic phenomenon in which myostatin is suppressed. Myostatin tells muscles when to stop growing. It’s only a matter of time before this starts getting experimented with in humans, especially athletes.

from what i understand they single out a gene that controls muscle growth(cant think of the name of the gene) n they retard that single gene. the result is what you see in the pictures.cows sometimes weighting 1,000 pounds more than a typical cow. then use artificial insemination and actually look sperm by sperm to make sure they are inseminating the sperms they want.

I happen to own 10 head of these large cattle. This is a natural mutation in this breed. They won’t make steroids out of these cattle and the meat don’t really taste up to par compared with smaller cattle, such as the angus breed. These are an amazing breed nonetheless.

These cattle are beautiful. A magnificent breed. This just show the natural process of evolution. Of course they did have a little help along the way. However, when superior breeding is accomplished, what would you suppose would be the outcome? The Belgium Blue! It is just the same when two very athletic beautiful people come together and create a child….. the same people you look up to everyday and wish you were. Get it together people and quit bitching. NOT everything is done with steroids! Read about the science before you judge it!

      November 30, 2008 @ 2:01 am

OK people, enough with the ignorant steriod talk. Even the best ‘roids couldn’t do this. The reason this breed gets so big is due to a mutation that causes them to be myostatin-deficient. Myostatins are naturally ocurring proteins that limit muscular growth. Deficiancy in myostatins essentially removes the anabolic roadblock so muscular growth goes unchecked. Some may call it gross, I call it a genetic lottery winner.

Calm down people. In order to produce as much meat as possible scientists did a very carefull procedure which is called ”power selection”,it is a procedure which takes a lot of time and combines checking previous and future generations for their efficiency to products such as milk or,in our case, meat to bones and skin ratio. As i said this is a very long procedure,it has nothing to do with steroids.Belgian blue cattles have this gene mutation that blocks the production of myostatin, combine this with the ”power selection”program and you have this remarcable example of meat direction animals.I am an agronomist of animal production and i participated at a program of purifing a domestic animal in my country and i know what i am talking about, there is nothing to be afraid of or or to be disgussed!

They have a mutation… its not a selective breeding thing, they just are prone to a genetic disorder. Its not painful for them, and they don’t taste good either, cause all that muscle leave little room for fat, which is why beef tastes good.

    62. Shane said

      December 4, 2009 @ 9:46 pm

These are not monsters nor are they the cause of excess steroids. They are a breed of cow created by cross breeding and it has no adverse health effects on them.
They merely produce more muscle and stay lean. I bet half of you are over weight fat-asses who are jealous they couldn’t be born with a mutated gene that made them lean.
It is a myostatin mutation. It was not done on purpose. This same mutation is found in whippets (breed of dog) and has been found in humans as well. A boy was born with this fantastic mutation in 1999. As a 4 year old boy, he had the strength of some adults.
He is also healthy with no other known problems. He was genetically altered either.
And they have been studied in order to discover cured to muscular dystrophy which can be caused by many diseases. Their meat is also valued for its leaness. You know, low fat. Thats a good thing. Maybe more of you should consider eating less fat.

Whoever calls these creatures freaks or their owners should be punished……Seriously, get a life.

As in all creatures…some tend to be more suseptable to instinctual behavior and time and time again, this breed tends to accomplish just that.

And for those of you whom are saying that this is cruel and that the people who breed them are ruining the cows and giving them horrible lives where they have to live with a painful mutation, I must say it simply isn’t so. These cows are just as happy as any other breed when treated right, like any other animal or person. They eat more, true, but they are not in any pain from their physique and get along just fine. Don’t spout ignorant nonsense and try studying your subject matter rather than making foolish judgments based off a few images.

    71. Grad Student in Biochem said

      October 11, 2010 @ 4:03 am

Texas Matt has it right. This is not a product of genetic engineering. The mutation happens normally and is just a variation like how some people have blue eyes and other have brown eyes. The only difference is that the resulting difference between these cattle and others is FAR more dramatic than eye color or coat color. Some humans have the same mutation and naturally have twice as much muscle as the average human.

    72. Ashley N said

      October 19, 2010 @ 2:23 am

Ok so those of you saying its a mutation you are totally wrong!!!! this cow is one of the best things to ever happen to our meat industry!! they are going to help eliminate all the problems made by factory farming, If you have done your HW you would know that this animal is created in the same way that ALL domesticated animals have been made, selective breeding. all you have to do is get sperm from a regular cow and pin point which sperm have the gene for larger muscles, and then do it again for the next generation and again and again untill you get the size cow that you want. as for ethical issues unless ur vegan there is no need to worry about animal curelty here, they can walk, graze, play, do everything a regular size cow can do, they just have more meat, not double muscles like other people have mentioned on here their original muscles are just larger… so before you comment on sites like this….know what your talking about!!!!

    73. repfarm said

      October 22, 2010 @ 4:55 am

This is not engineered in the sense some are suggesting. It is a natural mutation that has been bred for the trait. There is one human who also has the trait from what I could look up. I think the kid is 10 yrs old now. My friends and I are interested in how that turns out. He will definately be sampled his whole life. He needs good management to ensure his future financial protection. His offspring, natural and induced would be a game changer in research of all areas.

anyone who says they are “natural” doesn’t know what they’re talking about. Natually, they wouldn’t exist anymore.

My husband and I had some of these cattle and here are the facts:

      1. the bulls, the vast majority of the time, can’t even mount cows because of their own muscling, not to mention achieving penetration. In order to breed them, we had to collect semen and artificially inseminate EVERY TIME.
      2. the cows usually require cesarean sections. They simply have too many complications giving birth: even if bred to a normal bull a BB cow’s birth canal is generally too narrow, and BB calves are so giant that even if the canal is normal, the calf can’t be born naturally.

natural selection would have wiped them out as a breed a while ago. They’re only perpetuated by people, and quite frankly, I felt cruel just owning them. There are whole countries that try to stop people from breeding them because of all this.

BTW, you can bite one all you want, Hakan, but their meat tastes like crap. they wouldn’t look so impressive if they looked fat, would they? the same gene that makes them so muscular inhibits fat, and fat is where taste is at. We had a large head and sold them to several suckers who were impressed by their size.

also, yes they were, to an extent, engineered. the modern breed as we know it was further modified in the 50′s.

i had bulls and cows both that won ribbons all over the place, and they were considered a high quality herd, so all of the above wasn’t the result of them being a bunch of rag-tag, abnormal Belgian Blues.

This is an extract from the Pros and Cons of the Belgian Blue paper that I am currently working on, I thought the analogy might put things in a different light for some people… :

Take for example a four legged rectangular wooden table, normally it would have ten bricks on it, which cover the whole area (five by two), consider the outcome should you increase the size and mass of these bricks by two percent, the table would be able to stand the extra weight, now consider the outcome should you increase the size of the bricks by fifty percent, the table legs would start to bow, the middle of the table sag with the weight and the bricks would over-hang the edge of the table, causing strain on the brick themselves. How much longer before the table breaks? When should you, to save the table, stop increasing the brick size?

      Just a thought…

lol u guys r retarded, sayin God will punish u for what u did to these poor cows. R u a vegan? do u plan on having children? lol and if u did/ do have children what if they r awesome at something, is God gonna punish u and the other parent for creating this child??? also these cows werent created by these people lol, they were created by selective genetic breeding and development conducted in Belgium by Professor Hanset at the AI Center in the Province of Liege, circa 1950.
I think these cows r awesome!

For everyone who says that “selective breeding” is wrong, I hope you don’t own a dog, because every single type of dog in existence today is the result of 100′s and 100′s of years of “selective breeding”. There is no such thing as a “natural” domestic dog in existence today.

watch this, and it will show you how much a silver fox changes in appearance in just 50 years of selective breeding, based only on how “nice” they are. If you have a domestic dog, the only reason it is domestic is because of selective breeding.

So again, if you made one of those comments about how awful you think selective breeding is, I hope you don’t own a dog.
