watch this, and it will show you how much a silver fox changes in appearance in just 50 years of selective breeding, based only on how “nice” they are. If you have a domestic dog, the only reason it is domestic is because of selective breeding.

So again, if you made one of those comments about how awful you think selective breeding is, I hope you don’t own a dog.

For everyone who says that “selective breeding” is wrong, I hope you don’t own a dog, because every single type of dog in existence today is the result of 100′s and 100′s of years of “selective breeding”. There is no such thing as a “natural” domestic dog in existence today.

This is an extract from the Pros and Cons of the Belgian Blue paper that I am currently working on, I thought the analogy might put things in a different light for some people… :

Take for example a four legged rectangular wooden table, normally it would have ten bricks on it, which cover the whole area (five by two), consider the outcome should you increase the size and mass of these bricks by two percent, the table would be able to stand the extra weight, now consider the outcome should you increase the size of the bricks by fifty percent, the table legs would start to bow, the middle of the table sag with the weight and the bricks would over-hang the edge of the table, causing strain on the brick themselves. How much longer before the table breaks? When should you, to save the table, stop increasing the brick size?

also, yes they were, to an extent, engineered. the modern breed as we know it was further modified in the 50′s.

i had bulls and cows both that won ribbons all over the place, and they were considered a high quality herd, so all of the above wasn’t the result of them being a bunch of rag-tag, abnormal Belgian Blues.

anyone who says they are “natural” doesn’t know what they’re talking about. Natually, they wouldn’t exist anymore.

My husband and I had some of these cattle and here are the facts:

1. the bulls, the vast majority of the time, can’t even mount cows because of their own muscling, not to mention achieving penetration. In order to breed them, we had to collect semen and artificially inseminate EVERY TIME.
2. the cows usually require cesarean sections. They simply have too many complications giving birth: even if bred to a normal bull a BB cow’s birth canal is generally too narrow, and BB calves are so giant that even if the canal is normal, the calf can’t be born naturally.

natural selection would have wiped them out as a breed a while ago. They’re only perpetuated by people, and quite frankly, I felt cruel just owning them. There are whole countries that try to stop people from breeding them because of all this.

BTW, you can bite one all you want, Hakan, but their meat tastes like crap. they wouldn’t look so impressive if they looked fat, would they? the same gene that makes them so muscular inhibits fat, and fat is where taste is at. We had a large head and sold them to several suckers who were impressed by their size.

This is not engineered in the sense some are suggesting. It is a natural mutation that has been bred for the trait. There is one human who also has the trait from what I could look up. I think the kid is 10 yrs old now. My friends and I are interested in how that turns out. He will definately be sampled his whole life. He needs good management to ensure his future financial protection. His offspring, natural and induced would be a game changer in research of all areas.

Ok so those of you saying its a mutation you are totally wrong!!!! this cow is one of the best things to ever happen to our meat industry!! they are going to help eliminate all the problems made by factory farming, If you have done your HW you would know that this animal is created in the same way that ALL domesticated animals have been made, selective breeding. all you have to do is get sperm from a regular cow and pin point which sperm have the gene for larger muscles, and then do it again for the next generation and again and again untill you get the size cow that you want. as for ethical issues unless ur vegan there is no need to worry about animal curelty here, they can walk, graze, play, do everything a regular size cow can do, they just have more meat, not double muscles like other people have mentioned on here their original muscles are just larger… so before you comment on sites like this….know what your talking about!!!!

Texas Matt has it right. This is not a product of genetic engineering. The mutation happens normally and is just a variation like how some people have blue eyes and other have brown eyes. The only difference is that the resulting difference between these cattle and others is FAR more dramatic than eye color or coat color. Some humans have the same mutation and naturally have twice as much muscle as the average human.

sorry to disappoint all the nay sayers of this breed of cattle but they are all natural animales they naturally pack on the muscle with no steriods and they are alot better for you thier meat is extreamly low in cholestral and in fact i looked at a sight that does nothing but rach this breed and they said its as good or better for you than a skinless chicken breast.and its all natural no chemical or any thing the normal belgium blues arent as big but still bigger than a majority of the cattle in the world these cattle are apart of somthing called selective breeding for instace the biggest most musclar bull breeds with the same type heffer and this is what you get its like filtering out the things you dont like in your stock if you want a cow that looks good and has the charictaristics you desire you get the two out of the stock that share the same stuff.
