The Lion Whisperer – Kevin Richardson

Lion Whisperer 01

Animal behaviourist Kevin Richardson says he relies on instinct to win the hearts and form an intimate bond with the big cats. He can spend the night curled up with them without the slightest fear of being attacked. His magic works not only work for lions but other animals such as cheetahs, leopards and even hyenas do not hold a threat against him. Lions are his favourites and its a wonder how he can play, carress, cuddle with them whose teeth are sharp enough to bite through thick steel. Its a dangerous job but to Kevin, its more of a passion for him. Check out 17 more pics after the jump.

Grizzly Man was a dumbass. He intruded on wild Grizzly territory before hibernation season, when the bears were at their worst. The Lion Whisperer doesn’t go around screwing with wild lions – These are lions that are already used to human contact.

where I live you meet black bears and wolves quite often when walking in the bushand as long as you respect the fact that they are the boss in that situation and don’t try anything stupid you can talk to them a little and just ease away from them nice and calm and they don’t bother you, but this guy is amazing he interacts with them I don’t know how but BALLS

I am in love with animals but of a different level from Kevin’s

This kind of a relationship is predicted in the soon coming future where tha Prince of Peace, the Lord Jesus Christ will rule and reign.
For Kevin, hit might be just one of the hypnotising magic which is common among the fetish hunters in Nigeria. The hard fact is any form of magic has an expiry date and one day, “he that rides on the back of (or plays roller-coaster with) a tiger must surely end up in its tummy one day.
There’s a divine demarcation between animals and men and a limit to their interaction for now as a consequence of Adam & Eve misdeamenor in the infallible classic of ages – The Holy Bible(NO Apology). Magic will fail. Only the Power of the Holy God of Daniel can make an everlasting difference. This is, but for a moment.

Keep up the good work my friend and if you ever need someone to help out I woud love to volunteer..with kids almost all grown mommy isn’t needed as much!!

This is good stuff. KR is very talented. Comparison’s to Treadwell are quite uninformed. Treadwell was a hack who literally intruded into wild animals. KR has had contact with most of his animals since they were cubs and thus bonds have developed..this is not easy, but it is a world apart from Treadwell.

      These are great pics.

It’s only a matter of time before he gets eatten or badly mauled. When are people going to learn that animals do not have even the SLIGHTEST of human emotions. People just either ignore that fact or choose to play make beleive that animals do(like this guy). Animals kill, daily. And they dont’ loose sleep at night or have regrets about it. The only thing stopping a big animal like this from killing it’s own kind is if the animal on the receiving end can deal enough punishment to make that attacker stop. Man cannot do this. So sooner or later, he’s going to die. And no one in his “pride” will give two thoughts or miss him. Becuase death for an animal has no spiritual riturals, or celebrations or even tears. Death is death. Animals don’t “miss” you, they don’t don’t feel love. Your cat waits for you by the door becuase you are the “pack leader”. That is the only reason. Same with dogs. You can pet a cat and he likes it. doesn’t mean he likes you. Or will miss you. Becuase they cannot.

I agree with most of you – this guy is the luckiest man in the world to have these opportunities, but he may also have a bad day one day and wind up dead… still, I’d rather die that way than in a car crash on the way to a job I hate in some dirty city… I’m sure Kevin understands the dangers of working with big cats. The perks are just too good to stop him and I don’t blame him at all for taking the chances.

      Hi Kevin,

My name is Robyn. I am curious if there was ever a more definite diagnosis as to how Homer died. I was saddened by your loss. Also, I am wondering if it could have been something in the meat you used to stimulate his predatory skills, not that it is testable now. It just seemed coincidental. I hope things are going well on your side of the world.

I saw a program on Animal Planet last night where Kevin’s center of attention were hyenas, not lions. His favorite was a hyena cub he named Homer whom he rescued from its family. Homer’s sister Marge bullied him and if left alone in the pack, Marge would kill him. But at six months just after Kevin cared for him enough to introduce him back to other hyenas, Homer died of mysterious causes and Kevin was so distraught.

Fortunately there were two other male hyena cubs that he was so fond of: Bongo and Telik (or something like that.) Though he worked in a controlled invironment, you can really see the social heirarchy of the hyena clan. It’s the same as in the wild. Everyone has its place. And between siblings, one of them will dominate the others and in the case of Homer, he was clearly marked for killing by Marge! I saw another BBC program “Eternal Enemies” where one of hyena cubs in the wild, a daughter of a matriarch, killed her sibling.

Kevins rapport (if you can call it that) with the hyenas is simply breathaking! He was cuddling and playing with hyenas much larger than he is and they like him. They act almost like pet dogs to him. Early on, he placed Bongo and Telik with lion cubs for socializing. At first they played harmlessly but as the hyena cubs ages, they bully the lion cubs fearlessly! No wonder these animal species are mortal enemies in the wild.

Kevins show was not only for the dramatic effect of a human interacting with animals, but also as a very up-close glimpse of animal behavior that can only be accomplished when the animals allow a human among them.

It’s great how much kevin loves animals. But I think people need to understand that nature isn’t like disney’s Lion King, where these animals are capable of human-like emotions and reasoning.

It’s cool that Kevin is able to bond and mingle with the wild cats. But in the end, lions, panthers, etc are still…well, wild cats. From what we’ve learned so far, they will not hesitate to tear a human to pieces if they’re hungry or provoked (or perhaps even other factors). Which is why it’s a great relief to hear that Kevin knows what he’s actually doing, and understands the “calculated risks” he is taking.

As for the “bear guy” and his girlfriend, I’m truly sorry for their friends and families. As natural as it may be in the wild, I can’t help but shiver at the thought of what those two must’ve gone through. One moment, they’re still in their tent; the next, he’s trying to fend off a bear; and not long after that, his girlfriend would have to spectate him being mauled. I certainly pray that the same will not befall Kevin.

Hey, it’s his life so he can do what he wants but I for one think it’s pointless and dangerous. What is he hoping to gain by doing this? What is this contributing to the world at large?

There is important work being carried out at the Lion Park both in the areas of conservation and education. I worked there as a volunteer three years ago and cannot praise the people who work there highly enough. Kevin, and other members of the team at the Park ,have all had moments when I’m sure their stomachs hit the ground. Wild animals and humans should get on – but humans seem to forget that respect has to work both ways! I will return to the Park one of these days and it will be a huge priviledge to sit with the lions again. Yes – I will more than likely be scratched and bitten as I was before, but I know I will have a lot of very special moments. Give me lions over humans anyday!

I love watching any and every show that has to do with animals. I watched the one where Homer died. I found it to be so sad. I think what he does it great~!~!. Showing people that wild animals are able to be affectionate, but of course you must remember they are wild. I personally want to study sharks and show people they are not as vicious as many people think. The movie “Jaws” has given the such a bad rep. Also, I want to study Lions, Hyenas, Tigers..ect all animals people consider mean and vicious. I think Keven Richardson is great in what he does. I hope he continues with his passion about animals.

They have a place on this earth that is just as important as ours. I think humans have forgoten this in their greed for power and possessions. I for one think what he does is amazing. To all of you (ex. Lola) who are saying that Kevin Richardson shouldn’t mix himself in with the ‘wild’ and etc. Please, you don’t know the whole story behind what he does. First of all these animals are in a park not wild. Second of all he has raised most of these animals from a very young age. I am sure he knows that there are some risks but everything in life has risks. He knows these animals so well, can read their body language for one and has such a strong bond with them that they consider him part of the pride. And yes there is a point to this; and its called education. And even if there wasn’t a point to it does it really matter? I mean the guy is doing what he loves to do. That’s more than most people can say about their jobs. So please, before you bash Kevin and what he does; just get that facts straight. You are all entitled to your opinions but just don’t be ignorant about it. Thanks–Megan

Excellent. I like watching animal documentaries and obviously most people take to big cats.
Been reading a lot about the big 4 land predators in Africa.
Cheetahs are probably the safest ones. Hyenas aren’t so bad if you manage to bond with them.
      Leopards are moody thus dangerous.
But Lions are something special and extremely dangerous. They are social animals but very territorial and protective of young.
So it takes a truly amazing person like Kevin to be able to interact with them, and with the other cats/dogs as well.
He fully understands the risks, and to see him have 38 Lions in his reserve, now that’s conservation in whatever way you look at it. The animals do look healthy as well.
Long may he continue to do this, may he have the Lord’s protection over him as well, but I’m sure he’ll tell you that such animals have more loyalty than man.

All the same, I’m more than happy to watch him do what he does, from the safety of a fence or on the net and television.
Not all men can be brave as Kevin, or foolhardy!

What an irresponsible idiot. Whether captive or not, aclimating these animals to human contact is stupid and dangerous. These animals KILL and EAT well over 100 people a year and that is with a natural fear of people. Interacting with them also invalidates any worthwhile behavioural data as his influence on them means that the behaviour has been altered in way that it has lost any relevance.
The man is an idiot and a very low quality scientist.

Lions are so cool, yeah, it takes a lot of guts to go out there.
Personally I would not want to do it, because no matter how loving he was to them growing up, they are still WILD animals, and are not domesticated.
Even my cat a supposedly domesticated animal will sometimes bite me, hard. My point is that wild animals are unpredictable.

What does God think of this, for some reason people are really bringing God into this, so I will too, God created animals out of the same stuff he created man… But, yeah, we’re a lot different, plus we’re the only creatures that can make moral decisions. Does that mean that animals cannot love… they seem to have some similar emotions to us. Anyway, the bible uses lions as an analogy of power and of kingship. Satan was described as a “roaring lion seeking out whomever he can devour.” Yet also Jesus is described as “The lion of the tribe of Judah.”

So, what does God think of lions… he thinks they’re powerful, probably not something to play around with.

I will pray that he doesn’t get eaten.

It is as clever as it is dangerous and I fail to see what particular behaviours will be learned from such unnecessary and risky interaction. I don’t believe that there is any such thing as a ‘Lion Whisperer’ as anyone hand rearing could do the same thing. All this said I believe that the animals have not been declawed or pulled about on chains so are far better off with Kevin Richardson than with Craig Busch.

Very fine performance! Good on ya Kevin :-)
A couple of things…they are well fed so the “killer” instinct is not so evident in their behavior and the second thing is the fear factor. ALL wild animals sense the energy of fear from humans and if you can get a grip on that it’s half of the battle. I’ve encountered several bears in the wild here in the Canadian Rockies and the initial instinct as humans is fear, however the second I recognize that and send them just admiration they have stood there for as long as I send it and when I thank them they then have all moved along on their way.

I respect and am astonished at the work KR does living amongst the lions. I just can’t help to think about Murphy’s law and what terrible consequences he could face when things go horribly wrong…and eventually they will just a matter of time. All those lions cant love him all of the time think about it????

      Kevin,
The special bond between animals and man can be astounding. I live that love every day as a cat owner. Especially wonderful is just watching them and how they interact with one another, I feel blessed every time they rub up against me or butt my head. Rather than seek out my cats love it is nice to have them bring it to me. Allot of people would say you are lucky to be in such a position, but hard work has proven itself in your case.

Hi, my name is Dayanara, I’m not sure who reads this but i sure hope so that some how I would be able to get a hold with Kevin Richardson, so we can have a conversation and know how to help all animals in general. I’am still young and in high school, I made a promise to myself that i will devote myself completely to animals and go far and beyond to what needs to get done. I can assure that I will be one of the persons who make a difference in this planet. If there is a way that i would be able to get a hold of him please contact me to my email address. Thank you!

      hi all,

i’ve come across many animal lovers but a daring person like Kevin, there’s no other and peopled say that they love the animals but they feel scared to get closer to them but the real love can be seen in Kevin just by looking few of his pics with animals which behave like domesticated animals i just want to say he is awesome…

I love the approach that you have taken with these animals. It seems more of a cooperation than domination. You dont make them submissive to you as I see very often. Its a relationship that is valued on both sides and unlike what I have seen in other animals eyes to thier human counterparts, I and so many other can see that you are a part of thier family. What a high honor that must be. You are so blessed to have a connection like that.

This troubles me. I’ve seen the movie Born Free a gazillion times. As I recall, both Joy Adamson and her husband, were eventually mauled to death by lions, and they deeply loved cats. These animal lovers seem to live and die the same way.
The fable of the frog and the scorpion is a perfect example for the wild players, for which the frog allows the scorpion to ride on its back across the river, promising the frog that it wouldn’t sting him.
When the scorpion stings the frog, t……he frog asked why he would sting him, now they would surely both die, the scorpion answered ‘I couldn’t help it, it’s in my nature’

      Dear Kevin,

What I have just seen proves only one thing. You must have such a quality from within for these beautiful cats to accept you the way they do. For most people this would only be a dream and I would like to take this oppertunity to thank you for sharing these amazing pictures.

I would so badly love to just come and take some pictures if at all possible. Absolutely amazing
      All the best

Anybody ever check out “Fatal Attractions?” Good old Kevin is sitting on a time bomb waiting to go off and will assuredly join the ranks of the “Grizzly Man” and our famous Vegas tiger trainer who now exists in a semi vegitative state. Hwy, I suppose ir’s cool to hang out with lions and hyenas if you are a certifiable idiot with little or no regard for life or limb, I certainly hope that when the inevitable happens it too will be caught on film as an abject warning to those who like to play with fire.

      Mr Richardson

I watch your programs on TV and I admire you. I am passionate about wild animals and wish to become a Wild Conservationist. I am 17 years old and in grade 11. I have been trying to volunteer at wild animal reserves with no avail due to my age. I live in South Africa and hope to be part of your team one day. I share your vision and I know that I can learn a lot from you. You are just amazing and blessed to be able to interact with the animals like you do! God bless you, your wife and son for many years! I hope that we will meet someday soon!

Well as much as I absolutely love this man and the work he does, I too am afraid for him. I do not believe this can go on forever, it just isn’t that way of the world, all it takes is one little bitty mistake and he could be attacked. Even if four or five are just playing with him but get too rough, that could be dangerous for him. I really hope that he is the exception to the rule and he goes on to do this for the rest of his life. Good Luck Mr. K. and may God be with you!!

@biggunsar, you talk utter nonsense. I volunteer for Kevin Richardson and have seen the reaction of these animals when he comes near. Animals do love, and they do miss a person. I have even seen a lion mourning one of his own, so please do not tell me that they don’t feel. Unless you have really worked with an animal and given an animal the kind of love that only an animal lover can give, then you will never understand the animal. And yes, they are ultimately wild and can at any given time kill, but there is 100% respect there. Kevin does not push into his animals space, if they show that they are not in the mood, he respects them and leaves them alone.

I always wait for your show on nat geo wild, although I have to see it over and over again but I never get bored. Actually i want to be able to visit you, but I do not know how. I always dreamed of walking along with a lion beside me, hopefully one day my dream can come true. Thanks Kevin i very like you.

Kevin followed his heart of love of animals/nature as a young child. Wish I had done the same.

As a toddler, I cried when they burned the once “live” Christmas trees en masse in the town square. At 21 I was getting petitions signed to end the slaughter of the white baby harp seals.
NOW, even Sir Paul McCartney can’t stop the slaughter.

I am in awe of this man/human. Cats being my favorite of domestic animals, I am in awe of every living thing in nature. This intuitive, old-soul of a man is doing the gift he was given and the world will change because of his presence in it.

Any un-married older brothers, Kevin.???? I’m serious here.!!!!

God will always be with you.
