Aquarium Art By Takashi Amano

Aquarium Art 01

Takashi Amano is a designer, photographer and Aquarist(a person who maintains or owns an aquarium). He has opened a company called Aqua Design Amano where he introduced Japanese gardening concepts (similar to bonzai) into the aquascaping hobby. A form of art that changes your normal aquarium into an art of nature. 13 more pics after the jump.

Forgive me, but I know nothing about aquariums. I think this is beautiful, and I am wondering if this difficult to do in your own home aquarium. Are there any sites that offer instruction on how to add living plants and grass into your aquarium? Is it a cleaning nightmare?

True Jawhol, but the holy grail of aquarium-keeping (and any animal husbandry that requires an environment as well) is to make the environment self-sustaining… or at least as self-sustaining as possible.

Since the plant to fish ratio seems to be HEAVILY weighted on the plant side, the fish-poop would be kept to a minimum and be able to either be filtered or processed before it collects. As for algae, there are organisms that can keep that in check…

Other than that… I agree. Stunning though.

Also, some of them don’t take into account the needs of the fish. Many fish (especially the smaller groups of fish) need some tall plants or wood or what-have-you to “hide under”. Open waters give fish quite a bit of stress.

Lots of plants and fewer fish yield a fairly minimalist maintenance tank. I’ve got several tanks that grow well and look….good, but I haven’t gotten the “art” part down like Amano. I’ll keep trying though!

Apart from the odd syphon every now and again, these tanks don’t need to be cleaned.Heavy plant growth utilises all the dangerous pollutants( unless you go way over sensible stocking limits). indeed, excessive cleaning can starve the plants of macro nutrients when few fish are present!

I’m just curious, but, wouldn’t the set ups in the 7th, 8th, and 11th aquariums stress the fish out since there’s not too much cover??
