even if I had my ear gauged to fit that, I don’t believe I would ever shove a phone in my ear.

It’s a proper ear ring isn’t it.
I bet when he got home, he said to his girlfriend, “I think I need to go to the doctors, I’ve had this ringing in my ear all day”.
