Rare Giant Turtle Killed in Gaza

This endangered two meter long leatherback turtle (largest and heaviest of all living turtles) was unlucky and got caught by Palestinian fishermen near Gaza City. It was slaughtered and eaten by the fishermen who said its blood was an aphrodisiac among other therapeutic qualities. A Reuters cameraman said the fishermen collected the giant turtle’s blood and gave it to children suffering from trauma and adults with back problems. |

It ruined their nets, they’re not rich, and they gave the proceeds to the needy. You have to understand their culture. It wasn’t like they went out trying to harvest the freaking seas of giant sea turtles. It just happened. It really sucks and it would be great if they weren’t endangered because it’s an amazing creature, but at the end of the day: meat is meat.
