The Impossible Art Of Li Wei

Chinese artist Li Wei from Beijing started off his performance series ‘Mirroring’ and later on took off attention with his ‘Falls’ series which shows the artist with his head and chest embedded into the ground. His work is a mixture of performance art and photography that creates illusions of a sometimes dangerous reality. Li Wei states that these images are not computer montages and works with the help of props such as mirror, metal wires, scaffolding and acrobatics.
Check out 14 more pics of Li Wei’s artwork over the various years after the jump.

The images are a bit bland at best. The wire work is rather cliche. They look like tests for a film… and considering he’s a “stuntman,” I guess this isn’t far from the truth. In order to be taken seriously as a photographer, he needs to show real understanding of technique and lighting.
Anyone with a crew of people helping them could pull off this same thing. Nothing makes this work special in any way.

fantastic photos. I fully believe him when his states that no digital trickery was used. He already fully states how these are done; ie wires, mirrors, acrobats and so on. Why don’t people believe him? Jealous? Mebbe. Just enjoy the amazing images— they are truly inspired.
I’d be quite anxious to see more anytime I could. Great stuff, keep it up!

To all the over-tech’ed plebes who think this could only be done with Photoshop: You are very wrong and very ignorant. These pics were taken with old-school photography tricks, i.e., wires, mirrors, scaffolds, and some very talented acrobats as models. All you have to do is try to edit them in Photoshop to realize there are no pieces to remove, there is no pasting to be undone. This is what photographic art SHOULD be.

I’m diggin the whole only-edit-out-cables thing. For those who choon “It’s fake you @$%# assholes”, it’s called art. It’s not supposed to be real. It’s like the opposite of real. Which makes it even more real than the real real. Get cultured and cultivated bru!
