Future Of Robotics - Self Assembly Robots
|
This is a view of an early prototype of using a swarm of robots that could physically join and create a three dimension artificial organism. The robots would manage their own hardware and software and even self heal when damaged. |
There are ambitious aims to how the technology could be used where these robots would be used to solve tasks too complicated or dangerous for human such as deploying them in collapsed building.
1 videoclips of the self assembling robots prototype after the jump.

This technology would be the cheapest and most practical way to explore and colonize the Martian surface. Imagine launching a small light payload of self assembly ‘antbots’ have them land then activate them to explore to extract all the necessary elements and materials need to construct copies of themselves. Once they accomplish this task they could increase their mineralogical extraction to the extent that it would be feasible to build a large habitat to support a manned colony. The cost to construct would only reflect on the initial cost to develop, remotely monitor / program and launch the first generation of these machines. The only other financial requirements would involve sending astronauts and their supplies to the habitat plus construction of the launch/ transit vehicle to get them there. This technology represents the true cost effective future of manned and unmanned space exploration!

I agree with what you are saying. This is pretty cool.
