Accepted Into Chitika Program

My first application to Chitika ended up in a rejection of my site and the reasons given was that I did not meet the requirements as specified in the email which I cannot disclose due to legal confidentiality. They did not give the exact reason why they rejected my application but I went through the requirements and my site definitely fulfill all of them.

A bit disgruntled, I replied them an email of which I requested them to reconsider my application stating that I fulfill all of their requirements. I did not expect a good reply but then one of the staff replied that there must be a mistake in denying my site and I was finally accepted into the Chitika program. In the end I was happy with the response that I have gotten and hopefully I can earn some pocket money with Chitika.

March Traffic

Every month I will be posting my traffic results as well as rankings. This month has seen a huge surge in traffic due to traffic coming in from digg, reddit, i-am-bored and various forums and blogs. Next month I am pretty sure my traffic won’t be that high since my site is only three months old and not much traffic from search engines.

Hemmy.net Pagerank Increased From 0 to 3

Pagerank is one of the methods that google employs to determine a page’s value. The values range from 0 to 10, the latter being the best value. Popular sites such as www.msn.com, www.google.com and www.yahoo.com are rated at 9 to 10 to give you an idea how google rate pages. The higher the quality of the page, the higher the pagerank.

When a page links from Page A to Page B, it is considered as a vote for Page B from Page A. However, google also looks at the weight of the vote castor which means the more high quality sites link to your site the better your page rank. Pagerank is combined with sophisticated text-matching techniques as said on Google’s website.

The Digg Effect

What is this Digg Effect? Once your post has 20 or more posts, it will appear on the main page. There is a lot of difference if your post is in the digg story area and the main page. Once your post reaches the main page, this is where the Digg Effect occurs. Tons of traffic comes in your page generating revenue as well if you have any ad programs in your site as well as taking up lots of your bandwidth. People will just keep coming in and digging it to a number of considerable diggs as long as the post is not underquality. So is this effect a good thing or a bad thing?

Amazon Contextual Ad Network

Amazon has joined the likes of Google Adsense, Yahoo Publisher Network in delivering contextual ads on third-party published A beta test has started and it seems that Amazon is going ahead instead of MSN. Good news for publishers who are looking for alternatives to AdSense and YPN. However questions arise such as - Whether there are enough advertisers to meet the demands of publishers from three big players? Will Publishers gain from more alternative ad rates? What will happen when MSN comes into the picture?

High Traffic Record

My traffic soared from the previous record of 19 to 78 unique visitors! That’s a happy moment for me. Wakakakakaka. Before you lament on my low traffic count I have to clarify that this site has only been up for around 2 weeks since it started on the 10th January. Therefore the traffic count may be insignificant in contrast to those sites with heavy traffic. Nonetheless this will provide the motivation that I need to make this site better.

Preventive Measures For Google AdSense Ban

There are scores of people online that has been banned by Google Adsense. This is due to Google’s policy of protecting advertisers instead of publishers. After all, the advertisers are the ones that Google derives income from. Google has a FAQ here on how not to get banned by AdSense but they are only preventive details.

When somebody gets banned, Google Adsense emails the person that the ads has been disabled and no indication of which rule has been violated and a reference to the rules webpage. Remember, once u get banned, the chance of getting reinstated is very small. Google can afford to do that because they are big and you are nothing to them.

Google AdSense Finally Approved

Listed In Google

I was euphoric when a friend of mine told me that my site was listed in Google. Searching through my webstats statistics, I found out that Googlebot spidered into my site on 13th January 2005, which means that it got listed in just 3 days!! To test it out yourself, type the keyword hemmy in Google and this site will be listed on the first entry. I have tested on Yahoo and MSN as well however my site was not listed in there although I have submitted my url. It would probably take some time since every search engine has different methods of indexing sites. Well, being listed in Google is a great start to get free and targetted traffic from search engines.

The description shown on the listing though is not coherent to the content of the website. This will require some research on how Google incorporates the description which most probably would have something to do with the meta tags in the html code. Another method would be to fiddle with the extracted content in order to define a good description.

The making of hemmy.net Part 1

How did I come up with a domain name called http://www.hemmy.net? The hemmy name was a short form for hamster created by a friend of mine (who is a super hamster lover hehe). Initially, i was opting for domains such as http://www.katana.com, http://www.katana.net, http://www.renzokuken.com, http://www.renzokuken.net but all of them were taken (Blast those domain name owners!!). In the end, i just took a name which was easy to remember and I hope my friend won’t sue me for this :P
