The Tiger Temple In Thailand

Tiger Temple 01

The Tiger Temple or Wat Pha Luang Ta Bua is a Theravada Buddhist temple in Thailand and has been a sanctuary for many endangered animals including several tigers that walk around freely once a day and can be petted by tourists. The temple received several tiger cubs where the mothers had been killed by poachers. As of 2007, over 21 cubs have been born at the temple and the total number of tigers is about 12 adult tigers and 4 cubs.

The tigers are tamed by being fed with cooked meat to avoid giving them a taste for blood. The staff keep the tigers under control and the abbot will intervene if the tiger gets agitated. They are treated as family members in the temple and visitors are asked to give a donation if they want to take photos with the tigers.

The Human Bone Chapel

Bone Chapel 01

This chapel located in Sedlec, Czech Republic is decorated with human bones of over 40,000 people. They are decorated in arrangements like bells, furnitures as well as a chandelier. The history behind this chapel was that a plague struck the town of Kutna Hora during the Black Death (one of the deadliest pandemics in human history) in the mid 14th century and killed many people and the local cemetery had no more space for bodies to be buried. The Sedlec Chapel was then built as an ossuary to deposit the bones.

Madinat Jumeirah - Venice In Dubai

Venice In Dubai 01

Nobody would have thought that a Venice style resort could be recreated in the shimmering desert of Dubai. The Madinat Jumeirah resort was constructed by digging 3.5 kilometers of trenches around the 40 hectare resort and was filled with 600,000 gallons or 2.5 million liters of water. The result was a dreamlike Venice on what was once a beach. Madinat Jumeirah is the largest resort in Dubai and the only one with water taxis as a necessity.

Life In The Rubbish Dump Of Stung Meachey

Cambodia Trash Living 01

Stung Meanchey Municipal Waste Dump is a 100 acre garbage dump in Phnom Penh. Every day, several hundred scavenge through Phnom Penh daily refuse in this dump to collect rubbish to contribute to the family income. The rubbish are sold to recycling business which could earn an adult an average of 4000 to 5000 riels (US$1.00 to US$1.25) a day. “This is the closest thing to hell on earth I’ve ever seen,” said David Pred, an aid worker who is trying to assist orphans at the dump site. “I don’t understand how people can allow a place like this to exist.”

These people are actually considered the lucky ones as they could earn more money than they could in the rural village where they originally came from as well as a roof over the top of their heads.
